He's not a free agent till after next season.
Ah, my mistake. Either way, the long term of the franchise wasn't helped by this. St Louis may well be a guy that can play till 42 but I would never count on it.

Why does not making this particular trade automatically mean that you have to pay Callahan?
Irrelevant. There is no chance Callahan stays in Fla. He's heading home this summer and will be the Sabres Capt. next yr. Buffalo will give him everything he wants and they haven't denied it.
It was one or the other, he was either going to be signed or traded. Glad we went with the latter.
Right but he could have been traded for something else. I don't have it in front of me, but wasn't that what was being suggested by the poster you were responding to? That they should have traded him for something that helps them in the longer term instead?
like this move allot for NYR...MSL is big time and will help the O big time. Callys was a gamer but not worth what he was asking
Thank you, glad somebody else gets it!
Nobody is saying that this deal doesn't make the Rangers better right now. They're just questioning whether the overall cost was worth it for a move that probably still doesn't really make them a serious Stanley Cup contender.

From a Lightning fan's perspective:
Extremely thankful for what Marty has done for our club for years and years and years. But to turn into a selfish child and turn on your teammates WHO VOTED YOU CAPTAIN after Lecavalier left is down right ridiculous. Yzerman did the right thing. He turned a 38 year old cry baby into a guy who can help the Lightning down the stretch this year and a couple very high draft picks. Give the C to Stamkos and continue building around a star that wants to be in Tampa and won't bitch and moan when the boss makes a decision he doesn't like.
Have you not read the posts, yes some users have..

Johnnydollaz89 I saw this trade go down and immediately thought back to our conversation during the Rangers/Bruins game. LOL
Johnny, you are acting like there are two options: sign or trade. There are, in fact, three options: sign, trade, or give him up in free agency. And honestly, might have been better to let Cally walk than it would be to give up him and two decent picks for a year and a month of St. Louis.
Don't get me wrong, I love St. Louis, but he's old. Could he still be playing in three years? Sure. But I wouldn't bet much on it AND on the Rangers re-signing him. Only way I see this trade work out for the Rangers is if they win the Cup (unlikely) or if they flip St. Louis again next year for something decent. But if St. Louis comes out flat next year and loses tons of value, they lost this one badly. Not a fan of the risk they are taking on this one.
That said, glad this trade was made AFTER we played the Rangers last week.
I've been thinking about this trade for quite a while today. On its face it seems like a win for the bolts. When you dig deeper into it, though, I think a bigger picture emerges. To me, this is one of those watershed moments for the TB franchise. It's the final piece to leave signifying the end of an era in their history. No matter the specifics of the deal it carries a very negative connotation on MSL's character due to the lingering questions of just what went wrong here?
Is it really as simple as feeling slighted by your GM for not picking you for the Olympics roster in what might end up being the last year that NHL stars will represent their home countries in competition? Maybe, or maybe there's even more going on behind the scenes that we aren't privy to. I don't want to demonize anyone without getting all the facts.
MSL has been a great representative of the sport and this franchise his entire career and I don't think that ends with a simple Olympics snub. Moreover, as captain of the team I would imagine there would have to be a fairly significant issue at play here for him to leave fellow friends, players, and fans alike. There's more to this story than what has been revealed and I imagine in the coming years as this info comes to light, some of us will be troubled by the revelations it holds.
