Mentioned on Fitz&Brooks...

latest rumor is Nolasco

4

Kick
Blackburn

NO WAY!!!!

If we are taking on that salary, we are not giving one of our top doods.

If childhood fandom creeps in on this deal, then I think the Giants will be out of it. Nolasco is a So. Cal kid. Also, if this ends up being a highest bidder thing, I don't think the Giants will be the team that ponies up the most cash.

JMO, and for your consideration.

Nolasco has reportedly said that he WANTS to go to the Giants. However, I have not heard about his childhood rooting history. I would assume he was a doggie fan, though.

Anyway, I HOPE you are right that the Gs lose out on him. His career numbers make him a 3/4 at best and he is getting paid like a 2/3. He has a history of pitching real well at AT&T, but he was facing the Giants every time, so he wasn't exactly facing a menacing lineup.

Bud Norris would be a guy I would be willing to part with one of our bigger prospects. He was a Giants fan growing up and has openly campaigned to be traded to the Giants.

For the first part, about Nolasco, I agree. As a long time fantasy player, I have had Nolacso on several occasions. And, he is frustrating as hell. He will throw a gem one week, then a clunker, then a quality start, then another clunker, then another gem.

For the second part, I have heard that same thing about Norris. He seems to be a quality pitcher, one who has NEVER had any run support to speak of. Had he ever, he would both be more popular to baseball fans, and more popular in trade talks as well.

Norris always has reminded me of a young Matt Cain, big fastball and good curveball but rough around the edges. Norris could learn a lot from the Giants staff.

I would in no way trade one of our young studs for Nolasco, but Norris would be a different story.

Let's hope it does. Doyers get Nolasco and we get Norris.

:amen:

I don't like Nolasco's numbers pitching wise nor salary wise.

Of course, Norris' WHIP is 1.4, so that's not stellar, either. But he is cheaper, and younger, and has more up side. Houston would be foolish to deal him, unless they were bowled over by an offer.

This, sadly. Where a young player grew up rooting has NO effect on where they get dealt. These aren't free agents picking a team, nor legends their teams want to accomodate. Norris may have grown up a Giants fan, but if another team outbids us that's where he's going.

As of right now, I am not in favor of us acquiring anyone major at the deadline that will deplete our already mediocre farm system. One guy at a potentially high price is not going to turn this around. No more Wheeler-for-Beltran type deals, thank you.

I will throw in a name I would be interested in if all were in favor - Nate Schierholtz. He's having a fine season - 11 HR, .894 OPS - albeit in that arena baseball auditorium known as Wrigley Field. With Pagan out for some time, it would be nice to get a proven commodity. It would have to be for next to nothing, however.

Norris would not be a Beltran deal, though. He is under contract for anther year (at least. Not sure what his contract is, exactly past next year) so he would become a reg in the rotation, and likely good enough to stick through the next wave coming in '15.

Nate ain't ever coming back till Boch is gone. He and Boch do not see eye to eye when it comes to Nates playing capabilities.

Re Nate-Boch, I'm hoping time and mutual benefit, not necessarily in that order, could heal enough wounds.

Re Norris, per Bud Norris Statistics and History - Baseball-Reference.com , he makes $3 mill this year, and is arb-eligible in 2014, FA eligible in 2016, so you are correct, we would have some control.

Norris looks like a nice fit if the price wasn't too high. Maybe the fact that he could make $5-6 mill next year in arb (my number is a completely unsubstantiated WAG) would be high enough to scare the 'Stros into dealing him for not too much from us. Dunno.

It'll be a high price, regardless, due to the normal factors (deadline, cost-controlled talent, etc.), and you could be right about Arb scaring off the re-building team, but their payroll is so low, they shouldn't lose any deal based on that. It's Crick+ for Norris, and if it's true that the Marlins are holding out for Blackburn-esque prospects, that may be the only deal that makes sense right now. However, there is a lot of baseball between now and July 31st.

Pretty cool thingy on Disney:

San Francisco Giants 2013 Market Central - ESPN

Roll over each position and they list likely available guys by WAR
Pitchers are the obvious ones (Lee, Norris, Nolasco, Peavy, Garza) plus one we haven't discussed, Lohse

That IS cool!

I forgot about FRod. Thinking of 2002 makes me say "no" reflexively, but looking at his numbers, and his $8 million contract, makes me think Milwaukee might want to dump some salary.

Nate is not going anywhere, his salary is Cub friendly.

Rios would be worth kicking the tires on. Guy can hit. But is owed a ton of scratch. Not sure of his "D". Gotta be better than Towers. We take Peavy and Rios, Send over Towers and Kickham?

Good find.

we have discussed these two a bit here over the last few days. I think they need to sweeten the pot for us to take those contracts. There are still multiple years left on both those contracts.

Rios
Peavey
Crain

4

A bag of balls

I am still not sure that is a good deal. That is a LOT of $$ going to those guys.

Yeah, I forgot. No one answered my question, though. BP balls or brand new game balls? Of course, with the way the Giants have been hitting, they are one and the same. Still, gotta move Towers out before he commits some more errors.

Unfortunately, we were saying the same thing about Tranny.

"No way will he cost an A prospect. He isn't draft-pick protected and he is only a rental"

We were? I remember hoping it wouldn't take Wheeler, and feeling like it might be a better idea to pursue lower cost alternatives, but I wasn't too surprised by the outcome. The market for Beltran (even with the aforementioned deterrents) was far more competitive than anything currently involving Nolasco.

I seem to remember being very surprised at the cost, but trusting that that was the cost, and trusting the brain-trust.

I trust I used the word trust too much in this post, but trust me, it was needed.
