Fitz and Brooks are talking about White-Flag Trade II

Peavey
Rios

4

A bag of balls

Makes sense, but it is a lot of salary. Both are making 14M this year...

BP balls or brand new balls?

According to baseballreference.com:

Rios
2013 $12.5 mil
2014 $12.5 mil
2015 $13.5 mil (team option, $1 mil buyout)

Peavy
2013 $14.5 mil
2014 $14.5 mil
2015 $15.0 mil (player option for 2015 if he 1) has 400 IP in 2013-14, including 190 IP in 2014, and 2) is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2014 season)

Both are expensive, but Rios seems like he can still hit (unlike VFW), and Peavy has a lot of mileage on that arm.

Of course, if the Pale Hose throw in Chris Sale, I'd hope Sabes would throw in a couple more bags of balls. Or maybe they make us take Kepp and Gonor as well...

Does getting them automatically mean Pence, Tim et others are gone?

Have them throw in Jesse Crain for bullpen help, too!

So are you saying his would essentially end up being a Timmeh 4 Rios trade?

Seriously...

Tim is gone regardless. But good point about Pence. Would you rather have Rios for 2 years or Pence for 2 or 3 years at 15M?

Company line or the truth?

took a few deep breaths and I'm ready for the truth

Timmy represents this current golden age of Giants baseball but I think I know what's coming..

I'm blissfully naive that Tim is going to turn it around, being a respectable pitcher with a 91 mph fastball and crazy movement and that the Giants will find some way to keep him as a solid #3 in the rotation (marketing value as a factor)

But yes, bigger picture a Peavy/Rios move will look like a Tim/Pence swap. I think Rios would be only a one year commitment though

every day there seems to be a new team in the lead for Nolasco. Yesterday Dodgers were close to getting a deal done, now it is Colorado

From Grantland (I know I know but I dig their stuff), re the NL West and what all the teams might be looking to do)

Trade Deadline Preview: NL West Edition - The Triangle Blog - Grantland

Even with the current woes, I still don't believe this quote to be true: "Because as of now, this is one of the weakest rosters the Giants have fielded in years." I think someone is wearing World Series-tinged glasses. Of course, the author is referring to the injuries more than the greatness of past rosters, but honestly, even the drop between 2010 Torres and 2013 Torres isn't severe enough for me to wish for anything involving Huff, Tejada, etc.

:agree:

Read the comments below the article, one Reds fan is all bitchy about his team, thinking they should be ranked as 28th in the MLB power rankings becasue 'they can't beat good teams in a series' and they won't ever win with Dusty (THAT may be true). So in other words the fans of the team with the 2nd best record in the NL are shatting too. Things are tough all over...

Appreciate but not sympathic to his pantshattery .... the REDS are 11 games over .500 but trail both PIT and STL by 3.5. We, on the otherhand are 2 games under .500 and also trail AZ by 3.5. Sure glad we are not chasing a team like STL. I do agree with the poster that no one really wants to be a WC in a one game playoff. I can't imagimne the feeling of facing a Kershaw (or similar) in a 1 game playoff. That would really suck and makes everything a crap shoot. IMHO I tend to believe that both WCs will come out of the Central Division. That leaves us with the task of winning the division. We have half the season left to figure this all out. We need to 'fix' some of our more glaring holes but at what cost to the future. I'd rather not go through the Beltran routine again only to fall early in the playoffs or not make it there at all. I tend to think that any player availability in July will be at a significantly higher than market value.

To be a stickler...

If we were to acquire anyone, we would get them at EXACTLY market value. One can NEVER buy anything at over market value. If you bought it, you were the market.

You and I may agree that the price is too much, however. I trust Sabey Sabes enough that I feel he will do what is best for the org, whether that be to buy or sell.

That statement is the key to what I was trying to say. As a fan I may feel that we traded away a key piece of our future on a very big 'gamble'. That's how I viewed the Beltran trade. I understood the trade but I also felt that Beltran (or any other aquisition) was a big gamble for us at that time. I felt we were CHASING the playoff position and not BOLSTERING our line-up for the run through the playoffs. This year is a little different. Most of the NL West will be in this to the bitter end. If we were in the Central with the record we have now I'm not sure I would want to entertain any trades. We'd be chasing a team with a very big lead. I agree that management knows much more than we do but I also think that management's reasoning is usually much different than an average fan's. It should be. They need to keep their emotions in check.
