Some team with tons of cap room like the Bucs or Chiefs is gonna pony up Peppers money for him, minus some because he was injured.

Mario is one of those players who is so valuable you almost have to make an attempt to get him if he doesn't have the franchise tag.

The Niners' defense + Mario would MURDER offenses! Even if they didn't re-sign Rogers. He could play OLB & move to DE on passing downs. McDonald could move to NT and Sopoaga could grab some air. The QB would have like 2 seconds to get rid of the ball! Oh man I hope the Niners are interested.

Q: It's obvious the Buffalo Bills need to pursue both lines in the offseason through the draft and free agency. What do you think the chances that Houston "tags" Mario Williams, and if they don't, wouldn't Buffalo be a logical destination for him to land?
-- Mike (New York)

A: Houston wants Williams back, Mike, but it's fair to wonder whether it will use its franchise tag on him. If the Texans don't, there will be plenty of teams in play for Williams, who then might become the No. 1 free agent available. Any team with a defensive need and salary-cap space would have to take a look. But let's say this: Buffalo would love to have Williams. The questions are, does Williams want to be in Buffalo, and are the Bills willing to pay more than others? That's tough to say at this point.

Anyone really think getting Williams is possible? Would be nice to have him and Aldon opposite eachother, but our D is already the strongest. We need to pursue more on offense.

Well it's possible. Likely is another matter. But he alone could make the defense jump from top 3 in the NFL to contender for one of the best of all time. I REALLY hope the Niners are interested.

Sure it is possible if you don't mind losing the rest of our free agents on D and not signing an upper echelon WR.

Maiocco has us most likely taking the same approach we all expected...We are most likely to tag Goldson instead of Rogers. The Niners have also agreed to let Reggie Smith test the market as a free agent.

Sorry but no. Not worth gutting the rest of our team for....his current cap hit was 18 mil, willing to pay that kind of money for a guy that has been somewhat injury prone? I don't think that is sound judgement in building a sustainable dynasty.

Injury prone? He didn't miss a single game 'til his 5th season in which he missed 3. Then he was out for the year after 5 games last year. I wouldn't call that injury prone...

Just because his cap hit was 18 million last year doens't mean his average cap hit would be 18 million. Julius Peppers is only making about 15 million a season, and Mario Williams isn't as good a player as Julius Peppers.

Now I understand that contracts get progressively bigger, so their contracts would probably be similar. However Demarcus Ware only got like 70 million, and Ware is also a better player than Mario IMO. He's at least a better pass rusher & a better alla round OLB. In a 4-3 Mario would probably have more value.

BuffaloBills.com's Chris Brown doesn't believe the Bills will make a run at impending free agent OLB Mario Williams if he hits the open market.
The Bills need to improve a pass rush that tallied just 29 sacks in 2011, and a move to Buffalo would put Williams back in a 4-3 defense. The Bills aren't prone to bidding wars, however, and that's what will surely develop if Williams is allowed to walk. Sports Illustrated's Peter King said Monday he believes Houston is "seriously considering" letting Williams hit the open market.

By the way there are some people who keep calling Mario injury prone (which is ridiculous). The injury he sustained this season was a torn pectorial muscle. Now any injury that puts a guy out for the season is serious, but as far as season ending injuries go a torn pec' isn't bad at all.

If Buffalo pursues SuperMario, it means that he would be playing DE in their 4-3 scheme. Which also means that his agent would have field day asking for Peppers' type like contract (or at least close to it). Buffalo wouldn't even entertain it when that is the case.

The Buffalo Bills moved Dave Wannstedt into the defensive coordinator role in place of George Edwards this offseason, and with that move, speculation began to grow that they'd switch to a full-time 4-3 orientation. The team ran some of both schemes in 2011, though they did run the 4-3 primarily in the second half of the season.

During a press conference announcing some additions to the coaching staff, Bills head coach Chan Gailey confirmed that the team will stick with a four-man front, according to Rodney McKissic of the Buffalo News.

"We're going to start in a four-man front," Gailey declared. "When we hand you a lineup card it's going to have two defensive tackles, two defensive ends and three linebackers."

ESPN AFC East blogger James Walker opines that this is a smart move, based upon the makeup of their roster:

This is a smart move by Buffalo

"The Bills' two best defensive players are Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus -- and both are natural defensive tackles."

in the big picture, no doubt. mainly in free agency for the immediate.

if we get value for defense no problem here, but obviously we need to improve our offense. we can win enough regular season games, but we now need to win play-off games. WR is the easy focus and rightly so, but later in the draft we might even consider another WR, a RG, or even a QB?

i'd kinda rather keep smith and let goldson test. goldson is too reckless and i don't think he'll match his play year, which imo was overrated

I just thought of another good reason to sign Mario Williams. The Texans are maybe one of the most talented teams in the NFL. Taking Mario away from them makes a potential SB matchup a lot easier over the next few years.

I guess the same thing could be said about Cliff Avrill too (NFC playoffs) because the Lioins are another up & coming team.
