Don't let him judge how you sport fan. There are no rules to who anyone follows or how far you go with it. Even 'bandwagon' fan parjoritives are nonsense. We are all way more involved with the M's than they deserve, but I don't blame any fan that doesn't come back to it until the play on the field makes them pay attention.

Like many UW fans, I soft root for WSU when it isn't against UW. My son went to Penn State and I've followed them for years because of that connection and went back there for this years first visit by UW as a new member of the B1G. Also being a fan of whoever it is that plays Oregon is another angle many have against whoever their particular hated rival is.

I don't follow any level of basketball and really haven't since the Sonics were stolen from us. I probably haven't sat through more than 8 or 9 college games since then, even when Romar had them playing decent ball for a bit. They could go on a major run and I'd probably not pay any attention. That's just how my interest is.

You do you and stay true to the blue (lol).

I don't know how much I can handle the M's this year, but I'm sure I'll watch more than they deserve for me to and yet likely less than last year unless some crazy changes happen that we do not see on the horizon as of yet.
Boo, you can’t be a fan of in state rivals. Boo.

What rival? WSU is EWU without a red field now.
UW and Gonzaga are rivals. You both ratted on each other for recruiting violations. We may be EWU but you guys are basically Western where you may as well drop your football program cause you’ll never win more than 7 games in the B1G

To be fair I don’t think he is crying poverty. The Cubs don’t have the money those other 3 do. Problem is when owners do have the money and refuse to spend it like the Mariners.
Disagree. He is crying big time. Boo hoo. Cubs and Red Sox to me are one in the same money wise.

I found this interesting.

Private equity is a ‘silent’ partner

While interpreting some of the mixed signals around Wrigley Field, ESPN recently floated the idea that “private equity investment has ownership answering to more than just a handful of local minority investors like it did previously.”

Arctos, the private investment firm, has created a portfolio that includes stakes in the Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and San Franciso Giants, among other major-league clubs and franchises in different professional sports.

“A lot of teams have private equity investors now,” Ricketts said. “We’re one of them. First of all, they’re not allowed to participate in any baseball discussions, so they’re walled off from anything to do with payroll or player analysis because they have multiple investments. Never once has Arctos — or for that matter any private equity firm that I know of with other teams — made a comment about hurrying up to win or something like that.

“Ultimately, the private equity investors have very long-term horizons and are just looking to participate in the appreciation of sports assets in general. They don’t need certain win totals or cash-flow numbers. They’re just strong, silent partners.”

Private equity is horrible for baseball though if we are arguing we want to win. We all hate the Mariners ownership cause they have put profit over wins, but that is all that private equity is. Results on the field, boardroom, productivity doesn’t matter, just squeezes every bit of money as possible before they cash out.

Yes, but some top teams getting a nice bit of investment money to help run the team. Basically, the same structure as the M's when Nintendo owned us. But I do hate it.

We could only wish. Only cities can do it. As long as the big clubs keep spending stupid money then the MLBPA won’t do anything.
As much as I dislike Scott Boras he has a point that there's about 8 teams that made serious cash but won't spend.

This team is again going to have one of the better pitching staffs in the league and somehow looks even worse on defense and batting than their dismal last season.

This feels like a season they end up 10 games out of a WC slot or more.

Yeah, I'll still follow them because they're my team. Just won't be nearly as active with them as I have been the last 2-3 years as my patience are for sure wearing thin.

Boras has a point for free agents but to counter that owners will say they have spent more money than ever on pre arbitration players. I have no idea on what the answer would be but the whole pay structure in baseball is broke

This is where my idea of ARod comes in though. You get the influx of cash but it isn’t private equity where their only goal is to make money for the firm. You made great points on why the ARod thing probably wouldn’t work. But I sure as heck prefer an individual who at least might care about winning (which I know we don’t currently have)

I don't see how salary cap helps . Teams will just pay players. less . And still complain they are broke .

You have a cap and a floor. Football makes it work with a cap no reason baseball can't. It won't happen but should.

The fans will turn around and say the owners don't spend enough for a winning product. We see first hand with the Mariners.
I do agree the pay scale is broke but plyers union will never agree to a salary cap/hard cap or soft cap. It would take the owners locking out the players to try and get that in place.

Outside of the Dodgers, every fan base says their owners don’t spend enough money. Which is why IMO it is broken. Just think of how ridiculous it is that Mets and Yankees fans are talking about how cheap their owners are cause the Mets haven’t resigned Alonso and Yankees didn’t resign Soto. Same with Cubs and Red Sox fans. Just the whole model is broke. And truthfully I’m not sure how much a salary cap could really fix the model. With a salary floor, my best guess instead of spending a bunch of money in free agency the M’s would just pay Gilbert, Kirby and Raleigh what they are actually worth

That is the fear of the MLBPA. A cap IMO kind of helps in a way cause right now the owners and players are only concerned about making as much money for themselves as possible and no one is caring about the actual sport.
