This is one of the more bizarre sports-related stories I can think of. ND just released a statement saying they were informed by Te'o on December 26th that the girl never existed. Apparently he was duped, not the one who made her up. Still, there is a TON of skepticism floating around right now.
Smalls you have a link for this? This is all insanely crazy!![]()
Te'o and his father have been quoted several times talking about past instances where Te'o and this girlfriend have spent time together in person. They said that the two met each other after a football game at Stanford a few years ago and that she vacations in Hawaii where they have met up in person.
A friend of the guy who ran the fake twitter profile said that they are sure Te'o was in on the hoax for publicity. This is definitely hearsay but it's consistent with Te'o's claims of meeting up with her in Hawaii and at Stanford.
Moral of the story:
Don't date people on the INTERNET.
After reading the article, I think he was in on it.
I won't take some friend saying he was 80% sure he was in on it as evidence of him being in on it. I feel, not you per se, but some people have taken it as if the friend has an 80% chance of being right. What does his friend know? If T'eo could be duped, so could his friend. If T'eo wasn't duped, then I guess his friend is right. But I can't go based upon his friend to figure out the likelihood of him being in on it.
Simply saying that no one would be this stupid is not evidence, either. Saying that someone could want the publicity, isn't either. There are people who do get duped. I actually know of someone who has married someone he met online in high school across the country. It could happen, it's just that it would seem you'd eventually meet. But maybe not before a year.
He said he spent actual face to face time with her in the past, (as in those times she visted Hawaii), but now the girl is fake? Now his a victim of a hoax?
