Patriots, Saints supposedly won’t talk about a trade for Malcolm Butler
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media suggests that the Patriots have had no talks with the Saints on a possible Butler trade, and that the Patriots won’t until he signs his restricted free agency tender. While there’s no reason to doubt the fact that someone in the know is telling this to Rapoport, it feels like an effort to avoid any claim that the Patriots didn’t apply the RFA tender to Butler with a good-faith intention to employ him for 2017 at the amount of the tender offer. Patriots coach Bill Belichick has shown extreme sensitivity to this requirement of the labor deal in the past, and Belichick likely is tiptoeing on those same eggshells now.
Inb4 someone says commerce clause.Based on what section of the Constitution?
The question is, why hasn't that happened yet? Seems so simple. In other words, they are waiting for Butler to sign his offer sheet so they can work out a trade that gives back #32.......
But they can't say that....

So the real thing that is taking a while is the finalizing of any deal with the Saints to extend Butler. He bet on himself in 2016 by not signing an extension last summer when the Pats offered it. If he does so again, it's a big win-win for the Patriots and Butler if he's playing in New England this year.Butler wants $$.
The thing at WEEI I read lays it out.
His best option is to sign the $3.91 MM tender. Then the trade could happen.
If it doesn't, he still gets more than before and can make out like a bandit next year.
Sitting out doesn't help him.
But nobody is going to risk their #1 plus renegotiate with him.
I think he remains a Patriot for 2017. It's smelling more and more likely.

I would be ok with that but no way in hell would I give them our #11 pick.
