My kid is telling me that BB has/is personally scouting a kid from Mass that is expected to go in the second round..
The Pat's don't have a second round pick.
Interesting.

Patriots, Saints supposedly won’t talk about a trade for Malcolm Butler

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media suggests that the Patriots have had no talks with the Saints on a possible Butler trade, and that the Patriots won’t until he signs his restricted free agency tender. While there’s no reason to doubt the fact that someone in the know is telling this to Rapoport, it feels like an effort to avoid any claim that the Patriots didn’t apply the RFA tender to Butler with a good-faith intention to employ him for 2017 at the amount of the tender offer. Patriots coach Bill Belichick has shown extreme sensitivity to this requirement of the labor deal in the past, and Belichick likely is tiptoeing on those same eggshells now.

When has BB not tiptoed when it comes to players?

Not sure why NO would give up a pick and pay Butler all that money when they can grab a young CB at 11. Why would they do that? Butler is 27, and will cost a ton. They can get a kid cheap and keep him for at least 4 yrs. Now, if the Saints can get him for a second rd pick, then maybe it happens. Personally, I wouldn't take anything less than a 1st this yr for Butler (not saying he is worth that). If not, then he plays out this yr in NE and gets his cash next yr. I'll take Butler for another yr with Gillmore (poss Revis too) and watch them have a damn good yr.

In other words, they are waiting for Butler to sign his offer sheet so they can work out a trade that gives back #32.......

But they can't say that....
The question is, why hasn't that happened yet? Seems so simple.

Butler wants $$.

The thing at WEEI I read lays it out.

His best option is to sign the $3.91 MM tender. Then the trade could happen.

If it doesn't, he still gets more than before and can make out like a bandit next year.

Sitting out doesn't help him.

But nobody is going to risk their #1 plus renegotiate with him.

I think he remains a Patriot for 2017. It's smelling more and more likely.

I would be ok with that but no way in hell would I give them our #11 pick.

So the real thing that is taking a while is the finalizing of any deal with the Saints to extend Butler. He bet on himself in 2016 by not signing an extension last summer when the Pats offered it. If he does so again, it's a big win-win for the Patriots and Butler if he's playing in New England this year.

I think if he signed the tender the Saints could have him for that and negotiate over time or right away to appease Butler.

But to do so before he signs takes away #11 from them.

When the Cooks trade was going down this was a sidebar for sure which is why when Butler wouldn't sign #32 was tossed in to complete that trade.

Under the rules they can't even admit to that though.

Payton was interviewed today I believe and he said that they would never give up the #11 pick, not happening
