i have been calling to get rid of cruz. he has to be on the list to go. package him and resop to a team needing some pen medium leverage guys and dont expose their flaws too much in the next month.

who do you want to bless another team with?

I never really see trades where someone gives up a middle reliever for a major league hitter. That said, I'd love to see it happen.

Cruz is a guy I'd like to trade. Also I'd let go of any of the starters in AAA. Put the best one in the rotation, trade one, and keep one as insurance out of Locke, Wilson, Owens. Hopefully one of them can make a good 4 or 5 for the Buccos. Basically any pitcher outside of Taillon, Cole, Heredia. I wouldn't be opposed to dealing Marte if a big-time corner outfielder could be acquired.

They need a hitter to come in and basically provide what Aubrey Huff did for the Giants a few years back. You get a .280 20 + homer guy in the middle between Cutch and Alvarez and it's on.

we dont have anyone we can trade straight up for a reliable middle of the order bat of a good age to be with us as a major building block.

our only hope of getting one in a trade is to give them quantity of usable parts that can fit into multiple holes a team has now to make a run this year or next.

so guys like cruz, jones, resop, hague, harrison, AAA arms, correia become part of the quantity package, with limited quality. the quality we can give would be a guy like hanson or grossman or diskerson, or latimore kind of potential quality.

i think some teams will take quantity and have some role players as many teams have many holes to fill and might be willing to get rid of one, to fix 4 or 5 holes.
look at what the astros have done most years at the deadline getting rid of oswalt, pence, lidge for parts. seattle seems to do it and others as well.
that is really our only hope outside of FA.

Frankly, I'd be in favor of trading anyone for the right return.

Only older fans might remember the Pirates' trade of Frank Thomas (their best player at the time) for Smokey Burgess, Don Hoak, and Harvey Haddix. That trade is generally credited as being a very important part of creating the World Series championship team of 1960.

Not quite so long ago, the Pirates traded Tony Pena (one of the better catchers of his time, and very popular in Pittsburgh) for Andy Van Slyke, Mike LaValliere, and Mike Dunne. That trade was very unpopular at the time, but helped set up some pretty good Pirate playoff teams.

The key is getting the right return..... and avoiding disasters (e.g., the Aramis Ramirez trade and the Jason Bay trade).

I'd trade anyone but Cutch. And that's more because I love the guy and he so clearly loves this town.

I guess, in theory, Cutch could be traded, but it would either take another star, or 3 above average regulars to be fair value. Those type of trades never happen.

if cutch plays like this yr, it would take a mega deal to get him away.
i love him(not his arm), hanny (you have to close games that you worked 8 innings to win, just a big mental thing), and pedro(highest potential on the team).
