Thanks IPW. I found the following on the HF boards as well:

Since the conference playoff format began in 1994 the first seed from either conference has won 6 times, the second 5 times, the third 2 times, the fourth 2 times, and the fifth 1 time.

Since the President's Trophy was first awarded in 1986 the winner has gone on to win the Cup 7 times in 19 years which is 37% of the time.

In more modern times.....

Over the last 10 seasons in the NHL the 1st seed from either conference has won the Cup 4 times. The second seed from either conference has won the Cup 4 times and the fourth seed has won twice. No other seed has won the cup over that period.

I think what we can glean from this is that home ice advantage is crucial and winning the first or second seed is very important.

Just posting this for prosperity (and so I can compare these stats with yours )

4 games now to clinch top seed in the Western Conference.
7 games for the President's Trophy (Damn Philly is not losing enough games in regulation),

Phoenix, Dallas and Nashville can no longer catch the Canucks.

After tonight the magic number for Anaheim beating Calgary in the standings is 5 games.
Since it is still neck and neck with Dallas, the magic number is 9 games to get into the playoffs.

Booya! 3 games to clinch the Western Conference.
5 games to clinch the President's Trophy.

LA and Chicago can no longer catch the Canucks.

In other news, Ottawa and Florida have finally been officially eliminated from the playoffs. Both Buffalo and Carolina won tonight, which makes Toronto's chances of making the playoffs even smaller. I laughed out loud last week when TSN had a picture of Phaneuf on the front page with the following caption, "Phaneuf leads Leafs over Canes to close in on playoff spot". I guess it is still possible, but it still made me laugh.

The Canucks have clinched the top seed in the Western Conference. 2 more games are needed to win the President's Trophy.

Philadelphia needs 4 games to clinch the Eastern Conference.

Since the Canucks have taken top spot in the west, :canada:
Didn't think the Wings would catch them anyway, so after tonights games the Wings need 2 wins and a point to take the Central Division, we will see if they can hold onto second in the West. :noidea:
