Thanks IPW. I found the following on the HF boards as well:
Just posting this for prosperity (and so I can compare these stats with yours )
Since the conference playoff format began in 1994 the first seed from either conference has won 6 times, the second 5 times, the third 2 times, the fourth 2 times, and the fifth 1 time.
Since the President's Trophy was first awarded in 1986 the winner has gone on to win the Cup 7 times in 19 years which is 37% of the time.
In more modern times.....
Over the last 10 seasons in the NHL the 1st seed from either conference has won the Cup 4 times. The second seed from either conference has won the Cup 4 times and the fourth seed has won twice. No other seed has won the cup over that period.
I think what we can glean from this is that home ice advantage is crucial and winning the first or second seed is very important.
