Oh, by the way, don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge Henrik one bit for getting his big payday. My point is when the next lockout rolls around (and it will), some fans will rush to the owners side and Bettman (if he still is commish) will trot out the same lines he's used time and time again (we are paying the players way too much money) and fundamental economics no longer work in the NHL and they'll take another slice from the players after losing more regular season games.

I don't blame Henrik one bit for getting his money, I'm all for players getting their money, it's a tough sport, injuries can happen in an instant, it's not the players fault for getting their money, it's the GM's and owners at fault because they consider certain guys worth $ that they aren't

Henrik is one of the most consistent goalies in terms of knowing what you'll get from year to year - 30+ wins each season, good GAA and sv% and he's been pretty durable, that being said in the playoffs, for someone making 8.5 million a season and he has zero cup appearances, that's a huge amount invested - I'm not saying it's all his fault for the team's failures, matter of fact, I won't even blame him for the years they were eliminated in the first or even second round, but how about the one year they made a run(two season ago)? They had to eek out the first two rounds in seven games each against complete underdogs and then in the ECF, they blew a 2-1 lead against the Devils and Henrik was not good at all in the last three games - gave up 13 goals in the last 3 games and in game 5, when the Rangers scratched and clawed to tie the game up at 3-3 after being down 3-0, he lets in two more goals and that was the back breaker as the Rangers couldn't get it done in game 6

Jonathan Quick, for example, signed a 10 year, 58 million contract just weeks after dominating in the playoffs and winning the Stanley Cup, and Henrik gets 2.7 or so million more per year when he has just as many playoff wins in the last what, 5 or 6 seasons as Jonathan Quick has the last two playoffs(25 wins)? Henrik better deliver, zero excuses

if the rags decide to buy out lundqvist after 5 years in 2019 ... buyout cap hit would be just under 3 mill over 4 seasons ... so its not horrible financially considering its the new york rangers so they can afford it and the ceiling will prob be around 90 mill by then*

The feeling was that the vultures were out there and that the Flyers would have gone $9+ for Lundqvist and the Rangers knew it. I think the Rangers feel today that they got a bargain.”

Best goalie in the world. Only got a 1.7M increase from what he is making now. Cap is going to rise next year, one of, if not both Girardi/Cally will be gone next year since both of them will be in the ballpark to get 5-6.5M each. Somebody will overpay for them and it wont be us. This will free up other space for Sather to make a move.

Hank has also been the backbone of this team since after the 04 lockout. He's been the reason for whatever success, albeit small that we have had. All the hate he was getting in the beginning was ridiculous and he turned it around in November and played much better. No surprise that with this contract talk out of the way and overwith, he will get back to the King Henrik us Ranger fans know and love. It clearly was a distraction, even Biron said it.

He has been pretty pedestrian in the playoffs for the best goalie in the world. I would argue that 8mil or so will be better utilized elsewhere in the last half of the contract as well when he is > 35 but get there is always the IR loophole.

I have no problem with it. If he hit the open market some team would have given him something similar. I look at the contract just like Dipietro's & Luongo's deals. The contract sucks, but it is what it is. The Rangers had to keep him & they found a way to get it done.

I never thought of Dipietro as a star. Wang did though. It still ticks me off that Lundqvist was taken in the 6th round of the same draft.

I would argue that the Canucks did not overpay to keep the Sedins earlier this year (in fact, I would argue that the Sedins left significant dollars on the table). That said, the Rangers pretty much had to retain Lundqvist, it's pretty clear though that he didn't give the Rangers any hometown discount.

I think the two situations are completely different. The Sedins want to play together. How many teams who are contenders would have been able to offer them the money it would have taken to sign both of them?

Lundqvist has been one of the best goalies in the league for quite some time. He plays in a HUGE market. The Rangers offense while Lundqvist has been their has been questionable at best. For all Sather did in Edmonton he hasn't been able to get it done in NY with a lot more resources. The Rangers had to overpay Lundqvist. If they didn't he would have walked possibly even to L.I.. It would have been a P.R. disaster if Lundqvist left the Rangers for any other team. I wouldn't have blamed him though. It's kind of similar to the situation Tavares is in. I don't think either player is going to win a cup with their current team. Now Lundqvist is a Ranger for life.
