If Colorado's head coach demanded a contract extension and to be paid like Urban Meyer, should they pay him that kind of money because he has produced in one season?

No, that would be ridiculous, but if LSU comes calling and offers him LSU money, he would probably be an idiot not to take it.

That was one of the most shocking things to happen in college football. Saban wasn't a super hot coaching hire like an Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly. Both of those guys had taken mediocre programs to BCS heights. Saban had one very good season at MSU but it wasn't super amazing and he was mediocre the previous seasons. He legit shocked a lot of people with how successful he became at LSU.

That is what you are suggesting Michigan State should have done with Saban. It's easy to say that MSU should have shelled out top 5 coaching money for one good season being able to see what happened after he left. But Michigan State made the right choice with the information that they had on hand at the time by not over paying for a coach because he had one decent season and got blown out and wasn't even competitive in their two losses.

Makes you wonder how many other Sabans are out there that haven't found or might never find the right combination. Right administrators, right talent, right coordinators, right facilities... I personally would like to thank Dolphin nation for being such a shitty organization and allowing us to poach our current head coach and also thank them for giving him the opportunity that made him leave LSU, because quite frankly LSU courts the same out of state kids with better in state talent than we do. We could easily be talking about Saban bringing his 8th title to Baton Rouge this year...ouch.

No, I was just saying that he was a good coach at MSU. I personally would have made the same choices as MSU did, I wouldn't have been polite about it either. I would have told Saban he could go fuck himself. That doesn't detract from the fact that I think he would have had continued success at MSU.

I just hope Harbaugh has the same effect being ousted from San Francisco(moronically).

Well, since National Championships is a zero-sum game, you'll have to excuse me when I hope for much more limited success for Harbaugh.

With all of these jobs becoming available, it begs the question: how many coaches could 100% walk into a program and turn things around.

1. Nick Saban- proven results, turned 3 programs around
2a. Jim Harbaugh- anyone who can make winners out of Stanford has to do something right or cheat really well without being caught
2b. Urban Meyer- has had success at 3 different schools, if there was a playoff since the birth of the BCS could hold 3 titles at 3 schools.

That is all of them, 3 guys who you know for sure can get the job done. There are a few guys that fall into that possibly can range but there are no sure thing hires out there. The question is: can any of these guys truly get to the level of these three?

Jimbo Fisher- ton of success but still his team has underperformed, how much is to blame of lack of funding for coaches?

Tom Herman- doesn't matter for shit if you can beat the #1-5 team five consecutive weeks in a row if you can't get your team up to play inferior opponents.

PJ Fleck- he is still really young, has no major college football experience, a major roll of the dice giving a 16-year-old the keys to your prized Corvette.

Kyle Whittingham- done a solid job during transitional phase from a non-power 5 program to a PAC 12 program, but still has no results. Can he win with a better support system?

Bobby Petrino- yes the dude can win, but will he put a whore on his coaching staff to only fall off his bike and get busted for it?

I'm sure there are others I missed, but at some point you have to ask: is one bird in the hand worth more than two in the bush? Is this really worth the risk of firing our HC and bringing in someone else? (Not directed at Texas, whose coach warned them he would never win 6 games again and they didn't listen.)
I think you'd have to add Chris Peterson to the list, look what he's done at Boise and now Washington -- a program in the gutter for 20 years.

I saw on Twitter that San Fran is now 6-20 since Harbaugh leaving, and Michigan is now 20-4 since hiring him. His impact is pretty amazing.

I don't know about "one of the best CFB seasons, ever"...unless your a cardiac specialist in Tallahassee, but your point stands.

You're thinking of the season after.

at Pittsburgh W 41–13
Nevada W 62–7
Bethune-CookmanW 54–6
at Boston CollegeW 48–34
Maryland W 63–0
at Clemson W 51–14
NC State W 49–17
Miami (FL) W 41–14
at Wake Forest W 59–3
Syracuse W 59–3
Idaho W 80–14
at Florida W 37–7
Duke (ACC Championship) W 45–7
Auburn W 34–31

I don't think he would have had much more success than that. Michigan and Ohio state were very strong and Drew Brees was at Purdue. He may have had some more 8-9 win seasons but I don't see him sticking around long enough to see the fall of the Wolverines.

We discussed that yesterday on page one. And it is true, if Harbaugh is in the first list Peterson definately is as well.

You are correct, although in my defense...I somehow seem to not recall that season very well.

Fair enough, but I would have considered 8-9 win seasons continued success at the time. Just like I would in today's more competitive B1G...at least in the top half. It would be difficult for Saban to achieve the success he has had other than at a handful of schools.

True that. I don't expect to see another run like that in my lifetime, anywhere. I was at Alabama working in the SID's office during Stallings title, when we had a couple of years of good teams. I thought it was pretty good then, and thought it would be great to have a couple of years like that every 10-15 years. What we have going on right now is the kind of run that you can only beat on dynasty mode on your xbox....playing junior varsity. I hope it continues for another decade, but if he quits in January I will gladly thank him for the ride and wish his type A ass a happy retirement. Shit, I would wish him all the best if he decided he wanted to be Auburn's next head coach.
