We do have a pretty good pitching coach, so perhaps he could turn Liriano around. He doesn't need to revamp his pitching philosophy or improve his stuff, because both are just fine, he just needs to fine-tune his control. Walks are the only problem he's had in his rough years, really.
I think this is outstanding news for the Pirates! As I said in a post in another thread, I know that Liriano does indeed have some flaws but, he does have an electric arm & I do believe that Liriano could flourish in the National League working with Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage.
Plus, we re - signed Karstens as well.
I like the look of this pitching staff heading in to this season more than I have in a long time.
I think that the Pirates have had a very nice offseason for themselves.
Especially with getting Karstens back & still getting the Liriano deal done.
Switching to the NL will improve his numbers a little... I am not expecting him to win the cy young or to be on the all star team... If he could be a solid inning eater with an ERA under 4.50 ( his career average is 4.40 ) and if he can strike out more than a batter per inning (something he was still able to do last season) I would be happy..
Maybe he finds a way to cut the walk totals and turn in a great season... That would be Awesome! But I am not expecting a miracle or anything... 4.40 ERA...180 innings pitched and close to 200 strikeouts...That would be great IMHO
