So a monkey and a faggot walk into a bar....oh never mind...
That's because minority communities have a psychological need to reappropriate disparaging terms and give them a new connotation that way the next time someone calls them that slur out of malice, the word doesn't cut like a knife.
Did Meredith Brooks teach us nothing, folks?
I'm not saying that this kind of speech should be allowed in a sport that is attempting to become a more player friendly enviroment but I am still very upset that hrutful words seem to be of greater importance then physical assault to the NHL and world in general.
DChero said:I respectfully disagree. I think the best thing the league can do is keep it's distance. I don't see this as a "if you're not with me than you're my enemy" type of deal. This isn't all black or white, there are those who are indifferent, which I believe is the best stance when in the public eye.
Oh, I got you.
I think the league is cracking down on everything as it comes though. Hate speech wasn't in the forefront last month, but now that it's been used, it's the topic du jour.
I think most people are indifferent to most things, but the media is setup to make small outrage look bigger than it is - and in social issues, that's not always a bad thing.
The NHL has cracked down on hate speech in the past, and they must continue to do so moving forward. And like I said, Avery isn't just a hockey player. The vocal minority can make this look bad for everyone if there isn't even a slap on the wrist.
So what your basically saying that you can call yourselves anything you want but if anybody else does thers is a community outrage. Does this reall make sense to you?
in that regard, they need to fine avery for his comments too.. you cant punish for gay slur and not a death threat, even if both were said without the intent that they could be taken (clarification: i'm sure avery didnt actually intend to kill giroux, just like there is a reasonable belief that simmonds said what he did with no thought to avery's political backings)
Uh... yes. Bitch is a term of endearment for many women now, because women wanted to take the power away from men who would call them that word. And it totally worked. Not all women use it, but the ones who do have changed its meaning to them. They diffused hate speech, and it's awesome.
Real quickly, out curiosity what would the nhl do if avery called simmonds the n word
There's no death threat community though. I get your point, but no one really goes frantic over someone telling someone else they're going to get it (oh, Datsyuk, your time will come). Threats affect the threatened; hate speech affects everyone of that group. BET, Logo, WE... there's no cable channel for the receivers of death threats. :p
Why isnt something being done about Avery saying he's going to kill Giroux and all this crap about Simmons. where all the bleeding hearts on that situation.
You have got to be kidding me, are you trying to convince me or just your self that what you posted is true. around here you call a girl a bitch and it's on like donkey kong so no thiis thing a diffusing hate speech is just BS
Real quickly, out curiosity what would the nhl do if avery called simmonds the n word
I said I thought he should be penalized everyone agreed so it stopped.

I call people gay and tell them I am going to kill them all the time... Should I be fined? This is retarded.
