I could care less what sexual persuasion people are. However I do use 'gay' often to describe stupid people and stupid things and have since I was a kid. I never really used fag much, not because I found it offensive - I just never used it. I know when I use the word I am not calling an object homosexual and I know I mean no harm or offense, yet if one of my gay friends heard me and was offended I would feel bad. If I was in the NHL and used the word audibly and was fined for it I would be OK with it.

And I am not really in favor of everything said on the ice being scrutinized and judged on but I do feel if they fine and penalize racial slurs (which they should) then they should fine this too.

Hi nice post but i am asking this question all day and havent received a legit answer. Why would the league fine guys for racial stuff and gay stuff but not any other stuff like calling someone a woman i'm sure women take offense to that and cock sucker why would gay people take offense to that instead of just being called a fag?

The thing is if the NHL takes action on this, then they must continue so moving forward. If they do nothing, the media will run off to another story the next day and the situation is dead.

The ignorance tactic isn't always the best, but this could turn a small incident into a game-changing incident. I'm all for equality and freedom of religion (which this does fall under), but at the end of the day, it's one guy trying to aggravate another guy during a game.

If Simmons makes a statement beyond what was meant just between them (Avery treats it as between them), then there's an issue that the league needs to handle. If this was meant to be statement like that, then he would have said it during an interview, social media update, or at a press conference.

Pissing off a minority community is a stigma that doesn't wash off clean, and any bad publicity for the NHL right now is dangerous. It's just starting to grow again. Even if a non-suspension only makes the rounds on CNN for a day or two, it's just more work in getting the sport back up there in the mainstream.

Whether he meant it in the most offensive context or not is unknown. It needs to be looked at by league officials because it is, in part, their reputation that is on the line.

I fail to see how having Avery fight Simmonds would do anything to maintain or improve the NHL's public image.

I do not know, but calling someone a woman is not completely the same thing. Sure its meant as an insult, but the word itself is not a hateful term. And the other examples, I do not think just because racial and homophobic slurs are punished I do not think that means everything on the ice should be taken literally (someones "I'm going to kill' argument). I don't think that's a natural progression.

In the heat of the moment (do you remember when we used to dance?) things are oft said. I highly doubt that Simmonds craftily chose his word because of Avery's activism. Unfortunately, it's probably a phrase that gets uttered on every hockey bench, and something Wayne unleashed without a second thought.

However, the world is changing - and as Q has elegantly stated, professional athletes are held to a higher standard. And they should be. There seems to be a mentality that one form of hate speech is worse than the other, but they all have the same outlying effect. Bottom line, it's a word that shouldn't be used - especially in today's world. People could get away with feigning ignorance ten to twenty years ago, but not in 2011.

Simmonds should be fined. Losing a portion of a paycheck will probably have little impact on his feelings - but if it gets him to think twice about using the word, then it's a start.
