Lets do this!
Oh, so you don't think hate speech can be diffused?
Then stop using the word faggot, please.
Not on the ice nor should it be.

i see your point.. but thats just pointing out the awful double-standards that exist in this country.. what would the NHL have done if simmonds called avery a c-word
see.. you dont even know what c-word i meant.... it was cracker..
I call people gay and tell them I am going to kill them all the time... Should I be fined? This is retarded.
I could care less what sexual persuasion people are. However I do use 'gay' often to describe stupid people and stupid things and have since I was a kid. I never really used fag much, not because I found it offensive - I just never used it. I know when I use the word I am not calling an object homosexual and I know I mean no harm or offense, yet if one of my gay friends heard me and was offended I would feel bad. If I was in the NHL and used the word audibly and was fined for it I would be OK with it.
And I am not really in favor of everything said on the ice being scrutinized and judged on but I do feel if they fine and penalize racial slurs (which they should) then they should fine this too.

The thing is if the NHL takes action on this, then they must continue so moving forward. If they do nothing, the media will run off to another story the next day and the situation is dead.
The ignorance tactic isn't always the best, but this could turn a small incident into a game-changing incident. I'm all for equality and freedom of religion (which this does fall under), but at the end of the day, it's one guy trying to aggravate another guy during a game.
If Simmons makes a statement beyond what was meant just between them (Avery treats it as between them), then there's an issue that the league needs to handle. If this was meant to be statement like that, then he would have said it during an interview, social media update, or at a press conference.
But i'm saying nobody should be penalized and drop the gloves if you dont like what the other player is saying and by the way everyone did not agree with both guys should be penalized.
For the last time this isn't about the interaction between players. I think it has been pointed out that Avery (diving, whining, cowardly, POS player that he is) was not making a big deal out of this. It was the media who brought it up.
The issue here is how Wayne Simmonds, employee of the Philadelphia Flyers and the NHL, is perceived for his actions. He used a slur that is unacceptable in the public eye. Whether he meant it in the most offensive context or not is unknown. It needs to be looked at by league officials because it is, in part, their reputation that is on the line.
I fail to see how having Avery fight Simmonds would do anything to maintain or improve the NHL's public image.
Hi nice post but i am asking this question all day and havent received a legit answer. Why would the league fine guys for racial stuff and gay stuff but not any other stuff like calling someone a woman i'm sure women take offense to that and cock sucker why would gay people take offense to that instead of just being called a fag?
If Avery would man up and fight Simmons this would not be in the news today and i'm sure simmonds or anyone else would think twice about calling Avery a fag again so you see this has everything to do with avery not fighting. The NHL image is just fine and really doesnt need to be improved.
I do not know, but calling someone a woman is not completely the same thing. Sure its meant as an insult, but the word itself is not a hateful term. And the other examples, I do not think just because racial and homophobic slurs are punished I do not think that means everything on the ice should be taken literally (someones "I'm going to kill' argument). I don't think that's a natural progression.
If Avery fought Simmonds after Simmonds called him the F word, this incident would be getting a lot more press, because Sean Avery would be portrayed by the media as fighting for gay rights on and off the ice, and there would be that much more pressure on the league to force sensitivity training on its players.
Comeds a hateful term is a hateful term no matter how you use them. If they would fine and penalize everyone on the ice for any and all derogitory terms used we'd have no game left to watch.

I dont see this debate ending... But it is amusing.
Wait.. WHAT???
First of all, I don't know who this Simmons is.
Second, how could Avery fighting Simmonds take away from what Wayne said?
Offended gay person: Simmonds called Avery a faggot, then proceeded to kick his ass. Well I certainly feel better about that situation.
Second offended gay person: Me too!!! Isn't Wayne Simmonds awesome!?!?! What was all the fuss about?
First guy: Want to go to a Flyers game?
