I think a lot of those unnecessary risks were called overthrows and the pick was thrown to the inside making it easier for the CB to pick the ball.

Its just way too early to tell. Because he is so raw in his knowledge of the position that the resulting confusion absolutely has an effect on his physical performance. If you aren't sure about what you are doing, no way you are playing freely, which is needed to be accurate.
