made common sense for the lions to sign him.i said that a month ago in the redskin forum here.
They still have Badgely as far as I know so not sure if they keep 2 kickers or cut one by week 1.

They currently have 3 kickers after the signing. Seems like Bates probably has the inside track now with a 2 year deal.

are they talented enough to keep 2 kickers?
Almost no teams carry two kickers in the regular season but in Training camp you need multiple kickers because there is so much activity and drills.

I can't imagine a team would ever carry 3 kickers on an active 53 man roster... (one placekicker, one punter, one backup). In College it makes sense but in the NFL with an active 53 man, you need backups at much more valuable positions... and the chance a punter/kicker gets injured is minimal. If BOTH kickers go down, usually there is someone that can somewhat handle the duty (or you just go for it on 4th) until you can find someone off the PS or in free agency for the following week. And that's so rare... it's a moot point.

The kickoff rules are changing where a good kicker for the kickoff will be very important (no longer can just boot it in the endzone without a pretty stiff penalty), but I just imagine that will be something new kickers train for and 2 are still kept on the roster. Punting and placekickers are two very different things. I can't imagine teams are going to start having a kickoff specialist... either the punter or placekicker will handle that.

I think the only cases I've seen is where a kicker is brought in for a few weeks while the main kicker has a nagging injury that's not serious. But as soon as the primary kicker comes back the other guy is released or sent to the PS. Obviously if you had a really good kicker you don't want to put them on the PS cause then someone else will just snatch them up (assuming the kicker is willing to leave lol).

I think it is about the 2 kickers did not impress in OTA's so Lions took a shot at a third for preseason only.
