That's too bad... some of the very best players were before our time, but that doesn't diminish their greatness one bit.

I feel like a list of only the players we've watched would be very watered down and wouldn't come close to representing the 4 greatest Lions of all time.

Well, I kinda voted like that. Chose Hanson over Lane since I never watched Lane (or Layne) play and I already had Bobby up there.

All-time greats

Layne
Lane
Barry
Karras

Saw play live greats

Megatron
Suh
Spielman
Hanson

I can't put Porcher ahead of any of these Hall of Fame guys... I think he's in that next wave of very good, but not quite great players. Definitely our best DE that I can think of, though...

Al Bubba Baker.

I can't see leaving Megatron off... He's a current player, but he's on track to be right behind Jerry Rice as the greatest WR of all time. His career numbers so far plus the fact that he's also the single-season yardage record holder at the position is enough for me to put him in the Lions top 4...

It's too risky for me. Have you worked with stone before TPaul? It's a difficult medium.

I agree it leaves off some people who are worthy, but all those people are only great by what I have been told. I know Barry and CJ are great.

Megatron goes on a mountain by himself in about a decade.

Barry
Layne
Lane
Walker

I really wanted to put Lem Barney up there as he was one of my alltime favorites but he is not top 4. Same for Karras and Roger Brown. They were the reason I became a Lions fan. Yale Lary was probably number 5 for now

Also where is all the Porcher love? Dude was great for the Lions for a long time. always produced.

Almost mentioned Robert this morning along with Charlie Sanders. But then thought this was a thread for the top 4 and not some of my favorites during my life time.

Since i can only pick 4.......im going to pick players i seen play....i know the old timers were great, but besides highlights i cant really say how great they were..

1. Sanders
2. Megatron
3. Sims
4. Speilman just barely beats out herman moore...i needed a defensive player on my mountain

Honorable mention......bubba baker, lomas brown, bennie blades, robert porcher, jason hanson, eddie murray, michael cofer

Other players that i liked are suh, perriman, leonard thompson, kevin glover, dennis gibson and jerry ball.

Everybody mentions Speilman who was very good, but he couldn't carry Mike Lucci's jock. Just sayin'.

Calvin Johnson 6 years 488/7836/54

Herman Moore 1992-1997 517/7349/52

Calvin is great and hopefully he continues on the pace he has sat, but to right now say his career has been better then Moore's is not giving Herman the love he deserves.

Spielman, Sanders, Karras, and Sims.

Spielman was not only a great linebacker, but a great representation of the people of Michigan. He was a dogged worker who made it work on effort and grit as much as talent.
Sanders is automatic.
Karras was such a huge personality on top of being one of the best defensive players in team history.
Sims... injury cut short, I haven't even watched him play, like ever, not even highlights, but there is still a ton of talk. He was like a Bo Jackson was to the Raiders fans. Still a what if. The difference is ours is what if he didn't get injured and had talent around him. The Lions would probably have two guys in the conversation for GOAT and RB.

I kept Layne off because eff that guy and his curse.

I wanted to add Herman Moore because of how underrated his accomplishments are. I couldn't go with him for two reasons. The first is that I didn't want three guys from the same team. The second is that James K. Polk isn't on Mount Rushmore. This isn't about guys that did a good job and don't get credit. The mount Rushmore is about recognizability and being the face of the franchise as much as anything.

I really want to take Sims off and put Schlesinger on, but Spielman kind of fits his mold. The dude would break more facemasks in a week than the entire team in a year.

Plplplplplp. I saw them both play. Lucci makes Spielman look like an amateur. The Bears and Packers had nothing on the Lions at MLB, and they had Butkus and Nitschke.
