not FA related but..... Should he continue to improve, what a steal for a 6th round pick.

2020 Lions Rookie Report: Sixth-round pick John Penisini (usatoday.com)

Despite Detroit’s defense being ranked one of the worst against the run in 2020, Penisini performed quite well. The rookie racked up 35 tackles, four of which went for a loss of yardage. He also had one sack and a fumble recovery.

What was most impressive were his mechanics. Penisini was able to win many of his reps against notable offensive linemen in some physical matchups without drawing any penalties.

He was always going to be the type that has value but gets no credit. He has a chance to be the snacks Harrison type...before he came here and gave up

Detroit Lions release LB Christian Jones, C Russell Bodine - Pride Of Detroit

The move is expected to clear up over $2.5 million in cap space while also taking up nearly $2.2 million in dead cap. Some of that is due to bonus money accelerated from a self-voiding year that was added in the extension.

The Lions also announced that backup offensive lineman Russell Bodine has been released. Bodine was on a veteran minimum salary ($990,000) that was only partially counted against the cap due to the veteran salary benefit. The minimal cap space they will be creating with that move ($850,000) will be replaced by a similar contract already on the roster, but not currently included in the top 51—which are the only contracts that count against the salary cap once the new league year starts. In other words, there is no significant cap relief with this move.

2021 NFL free agency: Detroit Lions re-sign cornerback Mike Ford - Pride Of Detroit

Ford was scheduled to be a restricted free agent this offseason—the team’s only one—but with the minimum designation checking in at over $2.1 million a re-signing makes more sense. Details of his contract were not released at this time, but he played last season on a one-year deal worth $750,000, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him land another deal in that range.

Kenny Golladay turned down massive deal in 2020, could avoid franchise tag in 2021 - Pride Of Detroit

On Monday morning ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a couple interesting notes about Detroit Lions wide receiver Kenny Golladay during an appearance on “Get Up.”

First, he noted that discussions between the Lions and Golladay were serious last year, and the young receiver turned down some serious money.

“Keep in mind last year these two sides had discussion about a long-term extension, and Kenny Golladay turned down somewhere around $18, $19 million a year, depending on who you want to believe,” Schefter said.

BB_72: If this is true then KG is nuts. He wouldn't be worth 18-19M per for the type of WR he is. I cannot see a tag - n -trade coming. Let him walk.

He could probably get 21-22ish per year on the open market and I hope he does as long as it's not us paying him

LOL. I never even heard of any of these guys before. I dont even have to research this to agree with you.

I'm really good at cut and paste with non-existent players.

I understand that it's his possible open market value but that's crazy money.

You might as well have a carousel of drafting WR every 2-3 years.

Paying that kind of money to a WR is what got Atlanta and New Orleans into cap hell (not to mention ridiculous QB money on extensions).

This is a good read to understand how they forecast the Lions to use their LB corps and who they may target for specific roles.

The Detroit Lions appear to be prioritizing athleticism at LB - Pride Of Detroit

Like the Lions' previous scheme, Holmes targeted specific linebackers for the Rams who could either play off the ball or on the EDGE. The Rams’ SAM linebacker operated similarly to the JACK linebacker in the previous scheme, pass-rushing on the majority of snaps. The inside linebackers in both schemes had similar roles, playing in gaps, dropping into man and zone coverage, as well as blitzing. The MIKE linebacker stayed off-the-ball on almost every snap, while the WILL would fluctuate between lining up off the ball (next to the MIKE) as well as on the line of scrimmage (opposite the JACK). The Rams’s often used different WILL linebackers for the different roles.

Samson Ebukam makes a ton of sense as the Rams’ WILL starter last year—he played the “on the line of scrimmage” role. He won’t be nearly as expensive as Floyd and it wouldn’t force a position switch for Okwara.

Alex Anzalone (New Orleans Saints) has a RAS score of 8.15, so he fits the athleticism benchmark, and he is familiar with coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. If the Lions don’t bring back Davis, they may be willing to pay the higher price tag for Anzalone.

With Pro Days underway, keep an eye on draft eligible players who have high athletic marks. Players like Micah Parsons (Penn State), Zaven Collins (Tulsa), and Baron Browning (Ohio State) would be players capable of stepping in at the WILL. While Nick Boldin (Missouri), Jabril Cox (LSU), and Cameron McGrone (Michigan) are all off-the-ball candidates.

According to that above article, it's highly unlikely you'll see Ragland and Jalen Reeves-Maybin back.

and Tavai likely gets cut whether it's soon after new league year starts or sometime before the regular season begins.

The Lions will not use the franchise tag on WR Kenny Golladay (usatoday.com)

After weeks of speculation, the Detroit Lions will not use the franchise tag on pending free agent wide receiver Kenny Golladay. Numerous reports, including one from NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, indicate the team will not tag Golladay.

The team faced a 4 p.m. deadline on Tuesday, March 9th, but new GM Brad Holmes and the overhauled staff have opted to eschew using the tag. Golladay will instead become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 17th.

The franchise tag would have locked up Golladay, 27, for one year at $15.8 million. Golladay played just five games in 2020 but led the NFL in touchdown receptions with 11 in 2019.

Simmons, Maye, and Williams all getting tagged weakens the safety market quite a bit
