He's known for 7 seconds or less because that is the name of the book Jack McCallum wrote about it. It has never been based on 7 seconds or less, it is based in move it or shoot it.

The overall pace of the offense can be adjusted according to the personnel on the floor. For example, when the Lakers have older players like Pau or Kaman in the game, the pace slows a bit (still not as slow as the triangle) and when the reserves who are younger and more athletic are in, the pace picks up.
