Rays acquired OF David Peralta from the Diamondbacks for C Christian Cerda.

The Rays picked up a much-needed outfield bat Saturday after losing Manuel Margot, Harold Ramirez, and Kevin Keirmaier earlier this year. The 34-year-old lefty has smacked 12 homers across 310 plate appearances for the Diamondbacks this season.
The Rays continue to make smart moves. While other teams are daydreaming about how they could get Soto or Ohtani by giving up a bunch of players the Rays quietly grab a guy who could easily get on a hot streak down the stretch and help them out.

Giants acquired INF Dixon Machado from the Cubs for RHP Raynel Espinal.

The team was in need of an infielder with Thairo Estrada likely heading to the concussion injured list. Machado has already joined the Giants and is expected to start at shortstop on Sunday night

"Incredible! Genius! Those cheap bastards finally opened the checkbooks! Oh wait, nevermind."

(that's my impression of Montalban in that split second that it seemed like the Giants had somehow figured out a way to score Manny Machado)

The good news is that he's never struck out 100 times in a season.

The bad news is he's a career .227/.285/.295 (58 OPS+) hitter.

According to Zack Meisel of The Athletic, the Guardians have spoken to the Athletics about acquiring catcher Sean Murphy.

Meisel cautions that as of Sunday morning, those talks had not gained any sort of traction. Murphy remains under team control for another three and a half seasons, so the A's would have to be absolutely blown away by an offer in order to trade the 27-year-old backstop. On the season, he's slashing .238/.314/.423 with 12 homers and 41 RBI in 93 games.

According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, the Twins remain interested in Athletics right-hander Frankie Montas.

Reportedly, the Montas sweepstakes has been narrowed down to the Blue Jays, Yankees and Cardinals, though that isn't because the Twins have lost interest. Likely, it means that they simply don't have the necessary ammunition required to acquire him the way that those other clubs do. The same can be said for Tyler Mahle, who the Twins also have interest in but will likely fall short of acquiring.

Tigers would be dumb to trade Skubal. He's two years away from his first arbitration year.

on Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Phillies are looking for defensive help in center field.

Heyman adds that the Phillies could pursue Ramón Laureano, but notes that he's unlikely to be moved. He also lists Michael A. Taylor, Jackie Bradley Jr. or Jose Siri as potential candidates ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Nothing appears imminent at the moment.

but but the luxury tax lol

ob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Dodgers have been "much more aggressive of late" than the Padres or Cardinals in their trade proposals for Juan Soto.

It's been 16 days since reporting broke that the Nationals were exploring a potential Soto trade and they now have less than 48 hours to complete a deal. Nightengale previously reported that the Nationals are willing to hang onto the generational superstar for the remainder of the season if no team meets their astronomical asking price. The Cardinals and Padres remain the front-runners, but the Dodgers are clearly in the mix as well.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Frankie Montas is a target for the Padres, Twins, Yankees, and Blue Jays.

The general consensus seems to be that the baseball universe is waiting on Padres general manager A.J. Preller to make his big move. If San Diego is unwilling to meet the asking price for Nationals superstar Juan Soto, they would seem to be the frontrunners to acquire Montas. It would certainly benefit the Athletics to wait as long as possible, so a potential Montas trade could come down to the wire on Tuesday afternoo

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Astros are "showing interest" in Ji-Man Choi.

Rosenthal notes that Choi would represent a viable fallback alternative if they are unable to acquire switch-hitting slugger Josh Bell from the Nationals. Choi's departure would likely prompt the Rays to make some additional moves to land another lefty bat. There are a lot of moving parts with the Astros, but it's worth noting that they're looking for upgrades at catcher and first base prior to the trade deadline.

please no

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Astros are "focusing more" on Christian Vázquez.

Rosenthal adds that the Astros are seeking a catcher and are among "several clubs reporting a high (asking) price on (Willson) Contreras. It's abundantly clear that the Astros are seeking an offensive upgrade at the catcher position and both Contreras and Vázquez would make sense for the AL West leaders. It may come down to Houston being unwilling to meet Chicago's asking price on Contreras and ultimately pivoting to a deal with the Red Sox for Vázquez.

from the comedy dept

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Brewers are "listening to overtures" for closer Josh Hader.

With the Brewers seemingly headed back to the postseason, it doesn't make a ton of sense for them to truly consider dealing one of the premier relievers in baseball, even with lights-out setup man Devin Williams capable of ascending to a closing role. It's impossible to rule out a potential trade, but it feels like teams are merely checking in at this point.

Braves acquired INF Ehire Adrianza from the Nationals for OF Trey Harris.

The deal is official. Adrianza won a World Series last year with the Braves as a super-utility specialist and returns to Atlanta after appearing in 31 games this season for the Nationals. The 32-year-old infielder gives the Braves some added flexibility on their bench moving forward over second baseman Robinson Canó, who has been designated for assignment in a corresponding move

And by how many different teams.
What is it up to now....4?
The Braves can use Adrianza a lot more than Cano. I've always liked that guy. He can play just about anywhere (not sure about catching).

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Yankees are a "long shot at best" in the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

Passan notes that the Soto situation has ostensibly frozen the entire trade market as the Padres, Cardinals and Dodgers appear likely to remain engaged in negotiations with the Nationals for their franchise icon before moving on to secondary alternatives. It's possible the Soto situation creates an opportunity for another franchise to get aggressive, like the Mariners did last Friday in acquiring Luis Castillo from the Reds. However, the entire market seems to be at a standstill. The wait continues.

Is he better than Cano this year?
He did OK for the Twins a few years back, but is just a bench player.
