The swimmers are already allowed to do that. This law isn’t going to come without unintended consequences. It allows boosters to recruit students away from other schools by paying them money. It’s not directly from schools, but it’s money that would/could go to schools if paying athletes wasn’t allowed.

This isn’t a law that just permits legitimate endorsement deals.

Olympic Swimmers like Katie Ledecky have to forgo valuable endorsement deals if they go to college. But if she was there on a music scholarship she could do concerts and market herself while still in college. Why the difference ? Because some of the athletes bring in money . Specifically the Football and basketball teams and no way they want to share that.
Katie will make money down the road so it's not a travisty but what about the swimmer at Wisconsin who could help herself or her parents by getting paid to train high school swimmers when shes not training with her college team. It's stupid and wrong to not let these people make money from their talents and popularity.

They did a study on how much a scholarship ends up being worth at a top school in the NCAA.
After room/board tuition, equipment, apparel, coaching, transportation (flights, etc), lodging, training, use of facilities, tutors, and so on. A scholarship will cost a school upwards to 2 million dollars.

If an athlete wants to get paid while they are in school for free. They should pay for that free schooling. Because without the school and using the school’s brand, unless you are an Olympic athlete — you wouldn’t be getting any offers for ‘endorsements’.

And unless the school has football players they don't have a team and if they want good teams the build palatial training facilities and if they want to play they have to fly to where the games are. Quit acting like they are doing it for the players benifit. The ncaa didn't give a crap when UNC had fake classes and the atheletes were getting a sham education.

Have you notice how corrupt and what a huge mess that college basketball is? The Cali law will do that on a massive scale in college football. This law will be exploited and it will change the game as it currently is.

Watch Phil Knight buy Oregon a team of 5 stars.

Watch teams openly find jobs for kids parents that they don't deserve.

Watch mansions go up in major college towns to house these atheletes.

Watch local dealerships give kids cars.

Also her music scholarship often doesn’t cover free room, food, and definitely provide for free clothes, free travel across the country, and for many on music scholarships, they aren’t full scholarships so they aren’t getting their classes and books completely paid for.

Not being paid to teach is stupid and they should be allowed to do that.

Why is it the fans of the big money teams that know their boosters are going to be paying out the ass to recruits seem to be the only ones for boosters buying recruits?

Nothing stopping him now from doing it. But he owns Nike not Oregon football. He makes money because Alabama , USC , Ohio State , Florida , Georgia and all the other schools. He doesn't give Alabama over five million a year because he wants them to suck.

This law about a player making money on his likeness or popularity and talent that's it. The player not the family. We will still have the same compliance depts. If the back up punters dad is now working at a car dealership of a booster its not covered under these laws/ it would still be a violation.

Watch mansions go up in major college towns to house these atheletes.
Again. This has nothing to do with these laws.

Watch local dealerships give kids cars.
Go look at the parking lot where the players at all the big school park. 90% of the families of these players can't afford those cars.
Just like they do in hollywood each player would have a Q rating. If Jalen Hurts makes some money in a commercial it wouldn't raise an eyebrow. If the back up punter somehow gets a car for no reason it would still raise eyebrows.

Liberals destroy everything they touch. SF and LA are drowning in homeless, junkies, millions of illegal aliens, needles, human waste, garbage, rats, and diseases that were eradicated centuries ago are now returning. Yet, this pandering "progressive" hibitual lair turd Newsom goes on tv to grandstand on this matter with pro-athletes who live in gated mansions like he's doing something worthy for society.

You left out Seattle's enormous homeless and junkie problem...

They do get boarding at on campus dorms. My brothers daughter is at Cal Berkley on a mathematics scholarship and lives on campus , gets a stipend. She doesn't wear or need a uniform and she can eat at the cafeteria for a small fee but doesn't need to be 250 lbs to do her work.lol. She works tutoring High School students and is on the Frisbee golf team where I think they mostly smoke pot from what i can tell . lol

Don’t call it frisbee golf or they will whip a disc at your head. Only thing worse than calling it frisbee golf is frolf.

You're not thinking this through. You're assuming some of then will make some bucks doing commercials and that's it. Pandora's box is about to be opened.

I’m a fan of one of the select few schools with the deep pockets who could buy recruits.
I think it is ridiculous though. It is going to turn college athletics into an auction for recruits. Parents will be walking into recruiting visits with their hands out asking how much can you offer.
It happens now, but making it legal, would be asinine.
I hope schools put into the scholarships, the player cannot use his or her standing as a university athlete for financial gain. Make them choose if they want the scholarship or do they want to foot their own bill.

I enjoy watching the college game because it isn’t a bunch of pampered millionaires whining. It is kids going thru the college experience as I did.

If they open it up like they are talking — they may as well remove all rules in recruiting, as the top schools will just buy their recruits each year. No reason to waste 10-20 million remodeling a locker room — They can buy a couple recruiting classes with that money.

1880- Hey you get free room and board and get to go to school for free.
2019- Hey same shit while ESPN FOX and all the sponsors give the NCAA and schools billions to slice up.

LOL

They get a free education, room and board and food. Plus they can make contacts very easily. It’s not like they get nothing.

I’m all for a capped stipend. But having uncapped free for all and hiding behind “likeness” is beyond silly.

An again you are confusing yourself. Those billions the schools and networks slice up wouldn’t be going to the kids. It’s the private corporations and independents that would be paying the kids. So stating that billions in grand standing fashion is really a moot point.

You're the confused one. It's not a moot point. It means the NCAA and schools are bringing in billions from the popularity of the sport and there's no reason the actual players shouldn't be allowed to make some.
