This is a very good sign for the Cards. I have said since the beginning that I think Leake will end up being the best VALUE in this years class. And I think this contract lends towards that conclusion.

The Cards are still a net-loss on the off-season, but they are on their way back with this signing.

Because of my fondness for Leake and my irritation that the Cards always seem to not only land on their feet amidst loss, but often times maximize value in precarious positions, my reaction to the Cards signing Leake is simply:

Of course they did.

I'm a huge fan of this signing.

Obviously shouldn't pitch in Cinci but should be a stud in STL. I think there is a good chance he could be as good as Lynn without Lynn's issue of blowing out his arm in the back end of the season. Not a guarantee to be a great signing but really good odds.

Obviously not a guarantee as nothing in this world is, but he was about as sound a bet as you could make. Aside from his brief DL stint with us last season, he has been pretty durable and pretty consistent. He works fast, throws strikes, and you know what you are getting....7 innings, 3 runs, 7 strikeouts, 2 walks with an occasional burst from his bat. As a poster on the Giants board previously stated on a thread on our board, there is real value in that.

The Cardinals always seem to find a way to get people when and or make something out of someone. Good signing at not a bad price

I like the signing.

Leake has held Heyward to 1-14 in a small sample....he is 9-2 vs Chicago and something like 10-3 vs the Pirates.

He also has a career 3.49 ERA outside of Great America Ballpark and a 4.51 ERA at the launching pad also known as GAB. The likelihood that he "gets better" just by virtue of the park he calls home will assuredly bolster their rotation substantially.

While Leake was far from the best pitcher on the market this year, I think he will end up being the best signing (taking years, $$, performance into account).

Why couldnt the Brewers have made this signing instead?

Because they are tanking like about 12 other teams.

There's gotta be a reason the Giants took Samardzija over him, maybe it was Leake who wasn't into it. Maybe they think he's too small, and doesn't have enough raw 'stuff' to keep being effective. These guys do it for a living so I presume there's reasons.

The Giants would have been a very tough out had they kept Leake to go along with the other three guys. Good for him though; I hope he does well.

I still expect the Cards to go after Cargo and or Cespedes. They will not be at a loss starting the season. I am just glad that patch from the kid that killed his fiance in that accident is going away.

Lynne
Heyward
Lackey
Yeah...no. A full year of Waino, Leake and a healthy Grich, Holliday, MAdams, BMoss, etc...

JHey is easily replaced with Piscotty...

Team decimated by injuries last year that still won 100 games.

No net loss...in fact, net gain

Leake's bat should be able to replace Heyward's offensive production. Not a bat pitcher either...

Sure, but let's also not forget that we now have 3 of the first 32 picks in the draft because of losing Lackey and Heyward to the Cubs. Getting back Waino after a nearly completely lost season to a foot injury, so his arm didn't need to go through rehab, is essentially getting a top of the rotation guy we didn't have last year. As of right now, the Cubs are probably the better team on paper but so were the Nationals last year and we see how that worked out.

The Cards are a class org, though, so I would say there is little-to-no chance of the Nats-fiasco happening in St. Louis. Matheny is no Matt Williams and they will not be trading for Paps mid-season.

Why in the world did the Cardinals offer heyward more money than the Cubs over a longer period of time if Heyward was "easily replaced with Piscotty"? Cardinal fans are ridiculous sometimes.
