O.k. so I will ask the dumb question. These two minions go and Nonis stays? And then you add a layer of management with Shanny?

Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan
General manager Dave Nonis.
The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Kyle Dubas as their assistant general manager

Poulin had served as vice president of hockey operations for the Maple Leafs and Loiselle as vice president and assistant general manager.

What does that org chart look like? Who reports to who? And who does what?

Look, Shanny could've come in, blown everything to bits, start from the ground up. I'm not even arguing against the fact that maybe that was the best option.

But i'm not totally against seeing what you have to work with. Tinker a little, and see if the results change. If not, guess what? He's got a nice long contract and all the leeway in the world to make whatever changes he sees fit when he sees fit to make them. I would've fired Randy (I wouldn't have hired him to begin with, but), but do I fault Shanny for thinking Randy might be a decent NHL coach? No.

Same for Nonis, maybe he (and the organization as a whole) were wrong for keeping dumb and dumber around after Burke got the boot to begin with. Now they're gone, and he's got somebody new to work with. Nothing they've done this offseason was really awful, except maybe they gave Komarov too much. I know a lot of people freaked about the Gunnarsson trade, but it is typical of Leaf fans to freak out when a sack of PEI potatoes is traded for a sack of Idaho potatoes I guess. Didn't bother me. I was always willing to give Nonis one more season.

Shanny will watch the year progress, and watch for any hints of progress or regression and make a decision over the winter on whether he should move the bigger pieces and start fresh in all facets of the organization. Another 2 years of suffering, as long as it's for a good cause, won't bother me at all.

I suspect that Dubas is being trained for the big job and Nonis is basically there for insulation at this point while Dubas gets a little experience at the top level. If they can Nonis now and hire Dubas and this season goes as badly as we think it will then he has to take a bunch of shit at the end of the season (for something that he played almost no part in). If they keep Nonis around they have someone to sacrifice.

I totally agree.
I guess my point was this: Who reports to who? And why fire here and there, or is it a Leafs blame game? Ultimately doesnt Nonis ink the deals the underlings make?

I'll use the corporate analogy. Im a VP of op's and I manage you (insert your fancy title that you require). One of your employees who you oversee fucks up, costs us millions or better yet causes physical, operational or reputational harm to the core of our business. Do I pink slip him, you (his boss) or me? Or do I go over and pink slip the secretary in Marketing?

That is why I asked what is the org chart look like? It's like 3 card monty just sliding pieces around...

Sort of depends on the nature of the fuck up, doesn't it?

Not sure how they work it with their asst's but usually one is also in charge of their minor league system one oversees the scouting department and one in charge of capology

Congrats to Dragon. In honor of Pat Quinn and using hindsight, St. Paddy's Day was the obvious choice.
