Guys like JR Smith, Marcus Morris etc are really good 5th starters.

They are horrendous 1st and 2nd options.

No one has said that the Knicks have had great coaches.

What has been said is that you have one of the worst owners in sports, who hires lousy GM's, who put together bad rosters. It doesn't matter how good a coach is if he's given a roster that can't win.

As to Knicks players helping other teams, there's more than one way to put together a bad roster.

You can fill it with players who can't play.
You can fill it with players who are decent/good players, but no star player(s) to lead them or they may have a star player who is incapable of leading them.
You can build a roster that has too many players at one specific position.
You can fill it with players who don't fit well together.

That's just off the top of my head and the Knicks have done every one of those.

Currently, they have/had a roster with too many power forwards and a bunch of decent/good players with no star. Hence, Marcus Morris currently helping the Clippers when he couldn't lead the Knicks.

A team in the Knicks position needs to fix their front office, then fix the roster, then worry about the coach.
