Kevin Love Plans To Opt In For Next Season

Kevin Love plans to opt in and remain with the Cavaliers for 2015/16, as he tells Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group. Love has a player option worth more than $16.744MM for next season, and though he’d stand to earn more than that if he were to sign a new contract, whether with the Cavs or any other team, it appears he’ll remain under his existing deal.

Dashing the hopes of fans in NY & LA.

it should be rather hilarious how many people "conveniently" skip over this thread...especially because it clearly contradicts a lot of people talking out of their you know what...

That's actually pretty smart on his part. He can opt in, stay with a team that he knows will make the playoffs and if he's happy there after next season, he can re-sign with them under the higher cap.

If he's not happy, then he leaves after next season with a couple of seasons of playoffs under his belt and can sign for big money under the new cap. It also gives him a chance to see what teams he would consider going to have done to improve their situations.

Just because he saying he will opt in in January doesn't mean he will feel the same way in June.

Last February Lebron said he can't imagine playing anywhere else than Miami

This is all because of the TV deal that kicks in not next season but the one after. If he waits a year to sign a max contract then he could end up with 20 percent more than he would've made if he signed a max deal after this summer.

Pretty much a no-brainer.

Pretty much a no-brainer.

Except for the fact that he looks like garbage and it will only get worse if they don't pull Kyrie's coattails.

I don't think he's leaving the Cavs this Summer.

By all accounts, he's only gonna sign for one yr no matter where he is.

So, opting in makes sense unless some other Team with major Cap improves dramatically.

But, the Cavs need to at least show significant progress or he will bolt in 2016.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised he is willing to risk it.

He's not exactly Cal Ripkin:noidea:

In short, he is going to stick it out as long as Lebron is there not to mention he will never get 16 million again

Exactly.

Which has been my response to every poster convinced that Love is gone. Its January... nothing is even close to being decided. So much can happen either way in the next 6 months.

Now that there's news out about him staying... suddenly the other side agrees... its only January.

???

Love is easily a max player and will make the maximum allowed each season for the next 6 or 7 years.

This actually does help teams like LA, NYC, Boston, ect that have hopes of attracting a max player in the coming years. Love opting in means he is willing to give it one more year before committing long term to the Cav's. If he wanted, he easily could get a 5 year deal this offseason.

I disagree - Love is a good player and easily a great #2 or #3 option, but as they were discussing this morning on ESPN, the guy has no defense and when he is lacking offense, he doesn't have other ways to make up for his inadequacies. In short a max player can do everything and finds other ways to help his team win when he is lacking in one area. Love doesn't and can't do that. Defense wins championships - Love has none.

He's a modern day Dirk who can rebound. He is never going to be a post defender but in this era it's not necessary (no one in the league can post up anymore anyway). Obviously you need a good defensive C next to him but all players need compliments next to them.

Love is EASILY a max player in this league. Easily. His defensive problems are pretty overrated. Virtually every player has holes in his game and while Love can't protect the rim, he scoops up rebounds so teams don't get easy put backs which is just as important as protecting the rim. All he needs is a complimentary player next to him which is the case for virtually every big man in the league.

Cleveland's big mistake was being too aggressive right out of the gate and not waiting one more offseason to put together the best roster. They should have let Varejao walk and not committed so much to Mosgov and saved their ammo for this coming offseason when they could have have targeted Jordan or Chandler as their C.

Meh this is Probably nothing more than a move to take attention off of him. Stop being a distraction etc. after season is over it's still fair game.

Now Lebron and Kevin Love are fighting?

Love is gone next year. Too much money out there to be had. My guess is he will be in LA.

As for their being conflict? Maybe. Maybe not. But winning is in everyone's best interest, so it doesn't really matter.

Not shocking at all. As several posters already put, the better financial move for a player of his caliber is to wait until after next year to get the new max money. I have no idea how smart or stupid Kevin Love is.. Him becoming a free agent this year would definitely have moved my needle to the stupid side on Kevin.

Next year will be they tell. Let's say Cleveland doesn't win a title.. I'd rather be the man in SoCal than third wheel in Cleveland. Just saying. Time will tell.
