Jeurys Familia is now 23-for-23 in save conversions. That's one save shy of matching the franchise record for consecutive saves to begin a season. Armando Benitez began the 2001 season 24-for-24.

Terry Collins says Bartolo Colon's thumb swelled pretty badly. Mets will have to evaluate Wednesday whether a DL stint may be needed. Logan Verrett has been scratched from his Las Vegas outing.

Logan Verrett, the originally scheduled starter for Triple-A Las Vegas, has been scratched from that outing. I suppose the Mets are covering their bases in case they need an arm. Seth Lugo instead started Tuesday for the 51s.

• Morning Briefing: Noah Syndergaard on tap ... for real this time

NEW YORK -- Noah Syndergaard is due to face the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. Really.

Syndergaard originally had been listed as Tuesday's starter. But the New York Mets decided to give him an extra day of rest after he logged 115 pitches last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates while attempting a complete game.

Terry Collins insisted the workload against Pittsburgh was the primary factor in pushing Syndergaard back a day. Still, the positive byproduct is that Syndergaard now also faces the Washington Nationals on Monday in D.C. rather than the Atlanta Braves the previous day at Turner Field.

Syndergaard (7-2, 1.91 ERA) opposes left-hander Danny Duffy (2-1, 3.17) on Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. ET as the Mets and Royals wrap up their abbreviated two-game series.

NEW YORK -- Here are the lineups for Wednesday's 1:10 p.m. ET series finale between the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals at Citi Field.

Matt Reynolds gets his first career outfield start. He played one game in the Cape Cod League in left field, but otherwise has no game experience there. Still, the Mets apparently preferred to get his bat in the lineup against a southpaw over the lefty-hitting Michael Conforto. Ty Kelly presumably would have received the start, but he was demoted pregame to make room for Logan Verrett.

"In spring training we worked on it and everything," Reynolds said. "So I have a good feel for out there. Just messing around in BP, we're always shagging fly balls and everything. So I should be fine."
