Wow. Pretty surprised by that one. Not that we'd extend him, but that we'd do it at this point. I guess Paraag was getting bored waiting to negotiate with Colin and Aldon. I'll be interested to see the numbers. I think we've got to keep those two young guys.

Even if he loses a step the next few years he will be an awesome backup to Tank

The best part of this is I'll get two more years of good use out of my lucky Justin Smith jersey.

From Barrows:

Smith said that general manager Trent Baalke approached him recently about a new deal and that he readily agreed. In fact, Smith negotiated the deal himself.

Hometown discount? Very interested to see the terms.

I read that Justin Smith had language written into the contract that if the 49ers reduce his role to where he is only playing 10-20 snaps a game he can void the deal and walk away.

Sweet one of My Favorite Niners of all time stays a Niner longer. Still behind Lott, Rathman, BY, and Haley... but right up there...

San Francisco 49ers ? Niner Insider Blog ? SFGate.com » Justin Smith Q&A: ?When it?s time to get my ass out of here, I?m going?

Do you expect to play all three years? Will you leave early?

JS: I don’t know. I’m playing this one. I know that for a fact and then we’ll go from there. But I feel good. That’s the main thing.

You said last year you didn’t want to be the guy that just plays a handful of snaps at the end of his career. Is language built into this extension …

JS: Yeah, there’s ways for both us. That’s not going to happen. I said that. I meant that. I won’t be a guy that’s around for 10 snaps, 20 snaps. It’s either I’m going (to play full-time), or I’m not going. And when it’s time to get my ass out of here, I’m going. I get a ticket like everybody else, so that’s what I’m doing.

Good deal for both sides which is what I love about our players and front office.

Smith will still be effective until the end of the contract and it frees up cap space.

does this create enough room to sign someone else? Seymour? Abraham? Idonije? Rhodes?

Or do we hold onto the cap room as insurance in case someone goes down in the preseason?
