Here is your answer to who makes the decisions:

Utah's eventual hire will be Lindsey's first chance to install his own hand-picked choice after taking over for Kevin O'Connor as the lead Jazz decision-maker.

If he cites family as a reason for not taking the job, I hope they at least encourage him to ask his wife and children about the opportunity. I've heard good stories that I can't remember specifics about family decisions in athlete's lives - like Jason Kidd's wife deciding that he shouldn't be abusive. Ok, not funny. Domestic violence is a real and terrible thing.

He has said he won't coach until the kids grow up but maybe he said that because Jerry was the coach and he didn't want to coach anywhere else? Maybe he's waiting for Seattle to have a franchise? Or maybe really it is the kids? Get your priorities straight! 1. MHSL82 2. Utah Jazz 3. John Stockton 4. Family. Geez.

Someone once made the following post:

+++++++++++

Jason Kidd Triple Double:

* 13 shots of Jagermeister
* 12 punches to his wife's face
* 11 calls to 9-1-1

Stan Van Gundy allegedly stepped down from Miami in 2005-2006 to spend more time with his family. He wanted to see his kids in high school.

However, during the 2007 offseason, he visited Sacramento, and went to Kinkos with allegedly the intention of signing with them. However he secretly signed with Orlando after Billy Donovan resigned. Donovan had been hired by the Magic 48 hours earlier.

So yes, even if people want to spend time with their family, they can change their minds.

+++++++++++++++++

According to a Kings official, their only objection is that Van Gundy wasn't more forthcoming about his dealings with the Magic. Petrie had asked Van Gundy in recent days where things stood with Orlando, and the Kings were of the understanding that they would be alerted to anything close to an impending hire.

"We honored Stan's -- what's the word I'm looking for here -- approach to how he wanted to proceed," Petrie said. "You take that at face value, and sometimes things don't work out ... .

"It's like a good friend of mine once told me, you don't cry over things that don't cry over you."

Before Van Gundy hurriedly checked out of the Embassy Suites hotel in Sacramento just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, he -- according to the Orlando Sentinel -- spent two hours in a Kinko's copy store waiting for the Magic to call while his wife looked for Orlando homes on a computer. He faxed a signed contract to the Magic around 9:45 p.m.

Van Gundy then hopped on an airport shuttle and took a commercial flight to New York City, landing at 8 a.m. before taking another plane to Orlando.

Van Gundy had notified Petrie of his decision earlier in the evening in a brief conversation. Team co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, who were at the movie premiere of "Ocean's 13" at their Palms Casino in Las Vegas, were later notified. Van Gundy, who was officially introduced by the Magic on Thursday, insists he was not using the Kings as leverage.

"I wouldn't have flown out there just to negotiate with the Magic," he told the South-Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I know it was a crazy day, but why would anybody do that? When we went out there, we were not only thinking about it, we took stuff for the press conference."

Well, if the Kings' fans booed Stan the next time, would the headlines be, "Kings' fans have no heart for family time"? That's what happened the Jazz when Fisher lied about retiring for his daughter (he told the Jazz he was retiring, not moving to another team) and moved FARTHER AWAY from his daughter's treatment center and to a city with a WORSE eye center than Utah has.

What % of headlines were negative about the booing, and what % didn't focus on the booing?

Also, Stan stepped down in December 2005 for "family time".

If he was the one actively interviewing the Kings and Magic in July 2007, then obviously he changed his mind about family time.

Or the circumstances weren't the same to him anymore.

Stockton might be a dream hire for Jazz, for Dennis Lindsey?

I read Lindsey's answer to be consistent with someone who is respecting Stockton's space to answer. Maybe Stockton is considering it but if pressed he'd say no? That would explain the silence and secrecy (other things do, too). This author made it sound like he didn't want Stockton but wanted to be respectful.

I might be alone in this, but if he picks someone other than Stockton because he wants to pick his guy, fuck him. If he thinks someone else is better, fine. Hire them. Just don't egotistically choose outside the box just to get your guy, not "our guy" as the author suggests he might.

So far, no news is good news as I don't think Stockton would say yes quickly. Great news would be a yes.

Haven't they already been courting him for a few weeks?

Damn family - the reason why he is not our coach. Good to hear it from him, though.
