The bold is false, Running backs are just as valuable now as always, teams has just discovered they can run them into the ground before they can make real money and then never pay them. They use RB's that carried offenses for years falling apart after an extension as proof, but that does not prove their value is lower, it proves they break down faster.
That is a flat out lie. They are not.

Look at the last 5-6 SB winners....how many had a RB that was a high draft pick? Then look at their receivers.....

You need a really good to elite receiver or 2.

You can plug and play at the RB position and still win.

So I just looked up his contract.
I'm still not gonna blame Irsay since all the owners do this. He's not different in this regards.
but
Taylor on the final year of his rookie deal. perfect time to extend him if this was in their plans.
If not he is stuck & he can move on next year.
However. If he isnt in their long term plans. They should trade him this year. While they can.

I would understand not paying him more if they are going to another RB after this year.
I dont understand not wanting to trade him if this is the case however.

Now if they planned on keeping him long term. They should extend him now. Because no way he signs up with them next year under this pretense.

I am rooting for Taylor on this one. Now that I have looked at it more. Either to get the extension, or be allowed to be traded.

Sure. For the last 5 superbowl winners the running backs have been 4 1st round picks, then Pacheco this year.

Didnt work out so well for Bell or Gordon.
Gordon never had years as good as Taylor and Bell we already discussed. He had two peak years at age 24 and 25. Put up over 1,900 yards a year. Bell is an example of a back getting worked and then not getting paid for it.

Mike Evans and Chris Godwin didn't win shit without Brady and they're not gonna win shit this year either.

Or do you want to give the credit to a top 10 draft pick RB whom was on that team as well?

You need a QB and a defense playing well enough at the right time. Everything else is extra.

He isn't going to sit out....don't fool yourself.
He is if he's not going to get paid. No sense in going to training camp. Game checks are another story.

The whole point of the current dilemma with these RB's......they get used up by the team that drafts them and lets them go.

Because, RB is not a position that is as important as it used to be......back to your comment I originally quoted.

So what, they've won 4 of the last 5 super bowls.

5 out of the last 6 if you count this year when both Swift and Penny will qualify.

1. 2 of the 4 Suberbowl Champs had drafted their 1st round running back. I was flippant because your comment was nonsense.

2. One of the 2 remaining was traded while he was still on his rookie contract, so not used up.

Even if you work real hard to slant things towards, I still win 60/40.

If you made a blind assumption about superbowl winners and are wrong. Own it.

The Colts ability to tag him multiple times, after this year, is a lot to just give away because a player wants you too.

I do credit Taylor for going about it face to face with Irsay. But the NFLPA had their chance to change things very recently. And now one position wants additional changes. They had their chance.

He should be upset with his Union and fellow members as much as his owner and team.

Better to hold out in year 4 on rookie money than in year 5 on franchise tag money. If he tries to play all of year 4 he may not get to year 5. My advice is to sign in on time and play 6 games.

if this isnt dealt with this season. I dont see him signing that Fran tag. So while not much he can do this year. If the colts allow the relationship to break this year. Optic will be horrible to make him sit next year because he doesnt sign. If they let him walk. Then why not get something for him this year. While he has tradability.

If I am him & he is serious about playing the long game. Sit the 11 weeks this year, if need be. Something breaks next offseason.

If he doesn’t sign the tag, he doesn’t play.

He has no leverage. Play, or don’t. Get paid, or don’t.

I’m sure they’d take a first for him. But nobody is going to give them that.

"Suck it up and fulfill the contract YOU signed" is such a clown opinion in a sport where the team that offered the contract can cut you without pay at any time.

Look at any team cap situation and you'll see cutting almost any player involves eating dead money because of signing bonuses and such which is pay in advance for years on the contract.

Signing bonuses are still terms initiated by the team. The idea that a player is obligated to shut up and play while the team always has an out is absurd. The team will always have revenue to fall back on. The player can tear an ACL and be out of the game any day.

Trading him now means relying on cast-offs and/or late draft picks this season when they are trying to introduce a raw rookie QB. What are they going to get in return?

They very well might have been interested in extending him, but then he asks for $18M per. A 400% raise is probably not what they were looking to pay. Certainly seems like they were discussing extension until $18M was introduced.
