Gillis is not too happy with his head coach.

“John is a proven winner and competitor…..the running of this team is my responsibility and I feel that the last few seasons we have been chasing goal posts that have been moving and got away from our core principles of how I want this team to play and how we want to perform and the tempo we want to play with. People want someone to blame but the reality is that as an organization we have deviated from things that have been successful and I know will be successful. We will get back to those levels and that style of play that we started six years ago and we have the personnel to do it.”

Do you expect Tortorella back next season, “I don’t know if I will be back next season.”
On the style of play, “when you have an entire team’s level of performance drop off there has to be a reason for it. It’s a combo of things that have contributed to us not performing at a level that is expected. Those need to be addressed systematically and turned around so we can build the style of play and style of team that we want to have here. John is an accomplished coach. Six years ago everyone thought that Alain Vigneault couldn’t change from a defensive style coach to an offensive style coach. If given the resources and the players are committed to it any coach can coach the team that he has but having said that, our problems are far reaching and will be addressed. If people don’t want to get onside with how I view this team and how it’s supposed to play then they won’t be here.”
“I’m tired of chasing a moving target. We will get back to the fundamentals and principles that I believe in and if people don’t want to comply, we did this six years ago, we made hard choices and those hard choices will come again if people aren’t on the same page.”

This is something I've said time and time again, Torts is selfish, it's style or nothing and it hasn't worked at all with Vancouver. It was the wrong move.

I am not sure if anyone here thought it was a good move.

I certainly did not. IMO Torts needs a bunch of rookies and or younger players that get intimated by his bullshit. Dont get me wrong I think he is a total jackoff and always have but you give this guy young players he can scare them into a system that will get wins.

And then those young players figure it out and they eventually tune him out

:agree:

They sure do. It generally takes a few years though.

So at that point, why even bother with him? If you know that it will be a few years, then it's just pointless

He just doesn't cut it anymore - and he won that cup 10 years ago and had a strong core too so that's been a long time

Maybe Torts will say that Lundy sucked tonight and it is not his fault.

As a coach to a bunch of kids he is great but this team has a lot of talent and his pack it in non stop and block shots style can only go so far.

I think the players have tuned him out. I would if I was a player on that team

My 1st post on this topic.

My feeling have not changed.

Not sure what you are after here from me?

If I was a GM there is 0 chance that I would hire him. I dont like him other than him being a complete ass that is semi fun to watch explode on interviews and such.

Not sure if we are on the same page...

I'm not after you with anything, I'm just going with the hypothetical that even though he's good with young players for the first year or two, if you're the GM, why bother though when you know it will go haywire in three years possibly? You're probably not winning with a young team anyways the first year or two - so if you're the teams interested in him you have to look at the long term ramifications

Well....Money?

Look at the Rangers. He got them to play and make the playoffs. That = money

In the end it is all about the cash. If Torts can take a young group of players and get a 7 game series or maybe 2 which could mean 6 home playoff games then the GM is a winner in the owners mind.

I know but the teams that think about money before winning are stupid - that's why the Rangers have had trouble in the past because they're thinking about cashing in and money instead of winning - other teams have been the same way, like the Leafs for example

Idk if intimidating them makes them play better, look what he did with Kreider last year, making him the teams yo-yo all season long. I've said it time and time again, he needs the right personel there, he does not have it. Now i'm not saying these guts are great, so don't twist my words like some like to do, but he needs a team full of Callahan's, Dubinsky's, Prust's, Anisimov's to win games. Guys who are gonna play his hard nosed, grinding out type of hockey. I don't think there are many players like that on this hockey team. You can't change the Sedins, proven 80+ point players, into shot blocking, heavy fore/checking type players. It just doesn't work

Torts, in my opinion, is an asshole! Diarrhea of the mouth big time. He got a Cup with the Bolts only because he had 1 hell of a net-minder, great D & great scorers! A very well rounded team! He was just lucky to be along for the ride. He & Barry Mellonhead were the 2 worse hires by the Bolts hands down period!

And it's not working..And he's not going to change his style of play to better suit his players, trust me.

Kesler is a prototypical Torts player, I wanted him as a Ranger for the years Tortorella was here.

Torts gets the most out of bad teams. Give him a good team and he doesn't know what to do with it.

And yet at the 41 game mark of this season, the Canucks were on pace for over 100 points. That said, the cracks were starting to show in the foundation of the team.

It's funny because Gills called Moj 'fat' and it looks like both of these guys will be looking for their next gigs.
