He caught a lot of undeserved bullshit for what he said back in the day about riding the train. There have been pro athletes that have said FAR more offensive things that haven't gotten a fraction of the attention. However, he is way off base trying to compare this to what Collins did. I don't know if I'd call him a dick; I genuinely don't know if he actually knows how wrong what he says actually is.
