Good thread and good discussions.... But, it seems to have started because of lackey's playoff game.

Aren't the votes already in?

That's kind of what I thought it was at first as well, but I generally operated on the assumption that it wasn't anyway.

It was because of all of Lackey's post season games and regular season...

Lackey
Kaz
are the best two canidates
maybe Ubaldo

Mo - he was great, injuried a knee, then picked up right where he left off...not sure CPOY
Santana - won't even get a vote

Great discussion though, agree.

I would pick Kazmir as he was left for dead by most fans and probably organizations period... let alone being a solid SP on a playoff team.

I would definitly agree with this. I think Kazmir even amazed himself with how well he did this year. He certainly was on the scrap pile ready to be recycled out of baseball.

Aren't all the awards voted on before the playoffs begin?

Yeah, the play-offs have no bearing on regular season awards but Lackey was still solid this year. Kazmir would get my vote. I don't think anyone involved in any way with the game saw this one coming. As you guys have said, he was on the scrap heap heading out of baseball on one of those garbage barges. Kudos for him for fighting back and having a real solid year. Wasn't he a #1 pick out of H.S?

How can a player really win the CBPY award while retired? Mo could've won if he hadn't retired after the season, that means he's not actually back.

Damn none of these mentioned here had a good enough season for this award, Lackey 10-13? Kazmir 10-9? ok

I's say out of these mentioned it's between Vmart and Ubaldo.

To me, Mo shouldnt win just for the fact he's retired.

Playoffs have nothing to do with the award. But yes, it should be Lackey.

How can it be Lackey with these mediocre stats? 10-13 3.52 189 IP

Now Bartolo Colon. 18-6 2.65 190 IP

I know he didn't miss all of 12' season li Lackey, but he won the cy young in 05', then had 4 injured plague seasons before missing all of 10', came back in 11' and 12' with mediocre seasons. Now in 13' had one of his best seasons at age 40 making the all star game and posting career high in e.r.a.

If it's not Colon, there's something very wrong with these voters.

What exactly did Colon come back from?

Colon pitched 3/4 the season in 2012 and the time he missed was for his PED suspension....he wasn't hurt or anything.

To me, Mo shouldn't win it, because he likes Cold Play.

I'm not saying he was hurt, but he was mediocre/injured for 7 years after being on of the best pitchers in baseball since he came to the league.

This award isn't all about missing the whole past season cause of injury, look at Berkman won it in 11' after playing 122 games in 10'

Oh please.....he had a pretty good year in 2012 before being suspended.

Had he not been suspended in 2012 and had enough innings to qualify, his rate states were good enough to be:
11th in ERA
11th in WHIP
2nd in K/BB
12th in OPSA

Like I said, he doesn't belong in the conversation. He came back from nothing other than a PED suspension. He was good last year too, so that's not helping your argument.

Berkman was recovering from knee surgery that he had in Spring Training of 2010, and not being fully healed contributed to a crappy season from his part.

Colon was pretty damn good in 2012, unless you plan to tell us a 3.43 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 4.03 K/BB are poor. He wasn't hurt or anything either. The only thing that happened to him was a PED suspension.

Shouldn't be considered.

He was not good, not compared to what his average seasons were until the 2006 season. The guy was one of the best in baseball so last year was not a good year in his standards.
