This quote is from a column was written after Thome signed on with Cleveland a 2nd time.

8/26/11

In 2002, Thome said someone would have to “rip the uniform off my back” before he would leave Cleveland, then signed a six-year, $85 million deal with the Phillies as a free agent.

The outcry wasn’t exactly LeBron James-esque, but some Indians fans found it impossible to forgive. As Cleveland Plain-Dealer columnist Bud Shaw recently observed, “In Cleveland, there's no statute of limitations on holding a grudge.”

Thome comes back to the Tribe - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN

Jim Thome statue over a Jim Brown???....really?

That is a "city fail", to be sure. However, you can't hold the Indians responsible for that. They are responsible for what they do, and not for what the city they are in or the other sports teams there do.

Just saying.

Statues are the new 'in-thing' and Cleveland has a great Feller one...

Shouldn't they commision a LaJoie or Speaker statue before a Thome??

When thinking of baseball history, then I would say yes. However, I have to think that there was some public call for their to be one of Thome, whereas knowledge and interest of the 2 ancient Indian great you mention is probably slim to their average fan.

Is it the most "right" it could be? No. But, do I get and understand that thought process in selecting Thome over the other guys? You bet.

That does make sense, even if LaJoie and Speaker both pre-date most living Clevelanders.

Wonder how you all know how clean he was. A couple of years ago everyone was saying the same thing about ARod, that he was going to be the "clean" HR king.

Stop putting your hands on the fire for this guys.

As a very strong believer of "innocent until proven guilty", my opinion remains very high and unchanged on Thome.

Meh.

They both played their last games about a century ago.

Making them no less worhty, but just much less interesting to the common fan.

Par for the course in the "what have you done for me lately" world we live in.

Interesting I always associated LaJoie with the A's and Speaker with Boston. Always nice to look players up and learn something new.

Again, meh.

Who they choose to build a statue of is their business and it certainly makes sense that Thome would be high on that list seeing how (1) he was a great player and (2) there isn't a person alive in Cleveland who saw LaJoie or Speaker play a single inning.

One would hope that even the common fan would appreciate the history of Cleveland baseball...

Imagine if LA built a statue of Mike Piazza before they built Jackie Robinson or Sandy Koufax!

I had forgotten that Speaker did start out with the Red Sox.

He was with Cleveland longer than with Boston however.

This is the exact opposite of what a baseball fan should think...

I would think fans in Cleveland would be upset over this slight of their team's history. Without baseball history the game has little meaning...

And, who gets a statue while they are alive?? What if Thome goes on to become a serial rapist?... I was actually a little upset that Boston added a Yaz statue... But at least they already had their all-time greats immortalized.

Yeah I was surprised by the length of time each one was in Cleveland. Speaker is brought up anytime you see something on the Sox of the 1910s, as one of the stars of those teams.

Detroit has statues of two players that are still alive Willie Horton and Al Kaline. But even if Al Kaline turned out to be a serial rapist he would still be beloved here.

:omg:

We should have a baseball history board.

Tris is only behind Yaz and Williams for Boston outfielders. And among all Sox, he would still be top ten - and maybe top five (imo).....

:agree:

And, thinking of those who do or would not agree, maybe they also fall into this camp.

If there is not "an app for that" then it must not be very important.
