I can't believe the Pens didn't have an analytics department already.

Gotta remember though, he can only spend what the owners tell him he can.

They gave Eric Staal, Cam Ward, Jordan Staal, Alexander Semin and Justin Faulk long term contracts, are you telling me they can't spend money? That's hogwash, he just did a terrible job there - even if he wasn't able to spend money, he should have done a heck of a lot better at scouting and developing young skilled players to play on the 3rd and 4th lines, and they should have been able to do that well because they've been getting decent picks now for the last 4-5 years

Jim Rutherford would know about a lack of depth, look at his 3rd and 4th lines in Carolina during the course of the 2013-14 season:

Riley Nash, Patrick Dwyer, Drayson Bowman, Manny Malhotra, Radek Dvorak, Zach Boychuk, Chris Terry, Brett Sutter and Kevin Westgarth

That is beyond pathetic - those eight combined scored 35 goals, 55 assists and 90 points in 397 games this season - he'll fit in with a Penguins team that has no 3rd and 4th line either

Yep. I know it's not pretty. He did note that the financial situation was different in Pittsburgh than Carolina (he cited that when asked why his teams were missing the playoffs).

I brought this up in my last post, even if he couldn't spend money in Carolina, they should have done a heck of a lot better job at developing young talent to play on the 3rd and 4th lines - they have had high picks for the last 4-5 years now, if you develop young talent to play on your 3rd and 4th lines, you don't have to play scrubs like they have the last few years and you'll start making the playoffs and when you have more home playoff games, that's more revenue to at least retain those players

When you aren't making the playoffs, you're not getting the revenue from those home playoff games - and Jim Rutherford was a big problem there - money shouldn't be an issue, if you can't draft and develop then 95 percent of the time you aren't worth shit

Luckily, when it comes to drafting, etc. I think that's Botterill's now. It's definitely Botterill's this year, if not Botterill/Fitz/Guerin. And the guy is only here a few years. I dunno, I hated this before the press conference, but I liked most of what I heard. Of course, that's only if he actually makes those changes.

Well, we'll see how it works out. Rutherford had an up and down tenure in Car, not sure there is any debate there.

From everything I've gathered so far, Rutherford is basically here to groom Botterril, Guerin, Fitz for the future, while hopefully keeping the team afloat. The coach he decides to hire, is the most important thing he will do this year IMO

Food for thought?

CCtsn: RT @DFriedmanOnNYI: Jack Capuano is now the longest-tenured coach in the Metro Division. #Isles

How is his fault if the young players aren't being developed properly? Once he drafts them, then the rest is up to the AHL -NHL coaches.

It's up to the people drafting to see the talent - you can't draft a hack and then expect the AHL and NHL coaches to develop them - so it's up to the GM to know the talent first so that the GM can give the coaches the necessary talent to develop them - you can teach talented players how to play smart hockey but you can't teach players how to be more talented

The draft falls more heavily on the scouting department than the general manager. However, if the GM identifies the scouts aren't doing a good job, he should fire them and get new ones.

That's part of why Jim Rutherford screwed up too - he thought the scouts were doing a good job and obviously they weren't, so in reality, Jim Rutherford thought the players he was picking were good and clearly they were not, so it's his fault too

Fact is, he did not do a good job in Carolina like some people thought - that Cup win gave him so much leeway it's not even funny - most other GM's would have been canned sooner than him if they had missed the playoffs year after year like they did after winning the Cup
