I don't understand firing Shero still. He was great in trades, signed a lot of good contracts (a few bad ones, yes, but a lot of good ones), and if you were displeased with the draft, overhaul the scouting department.

It's kind of how I feel about it. Unless they didn't like his choice of coaches I don't see a huge problem. And if it was his choices coaches, why retain Bylsma for this long?

1000000000% obvious that the coaching decision was ownership's, not Rutherford's. This presser is chock full of information, btw. I can't keep up with it all.

I love the analytics talk, and I love that they basically are grooming three guys to be GMs. I LOVE the inclusion of Guerin.

Annnnnd boom. Rutherford says this is probably a 2-3 year gig. He's there to mentor three potential GMs.

It gives Boterill a bone to stay on longer.

I'm pretty sure that Rutherford has noted the big weaknesses already, and that's brilliant. He noted a lack of adjustment against certain teams (when talking about Blysma), talked about utilizing analytics, he talked about lack of depth/support cast (fourth line filled with double digit minuses), talked about quiet locker room and need for a voice (can we get a Bill Guerin clone?), etc. He's hit the nail on the head with pretty much every worry I've had. It's impressive.

I wouldn't want advice from Jim Rutherford on analytics considering the Hurricanes have blown ever since winning the Cup - he has put together some horribly pathetic teams the last few years that people still don't rip him for because they've still gotten a pass for winning the cup

"4th line players in double digit minuses. You can't have that."

So long Adams and Glass aka Gladams 4th line.

Plus like how he said looking for a coach who knows how to make adjustments (shot fired at Disco)

Yeah not too warm and fuzzy with Rutherford but surrounding him with smart associates/assistants will help.

He said they'd bring in a guy specifically for analytics, so I'm guessing that he himself has a basic knowledge, but they want to bring in a pro. I really get the feeling this is a GM-team more than anything. We'll see. I feel better after that for the most part. The only thing that still has me uneasy is the involvement of Morehouse. Rutherford did say that he has full control, but who knows really. This is sort of an unprecedented approach to things...bringing in an older guy to mentor a younger one. Very interesting.

Basically brought in a veteran to mentor and monitor, it's like a 3 year audition.

Makes you think they wanted Boterill all along but didn't feel he was ready or maybe Boterill didn't feel he was 100% ready?

You know Shero wasn't going to mentor him so they needed someone that was going to "retire" soon.

Jim Rutherford would know about a lack of depth, look at his 3rd and 4th lines in Carolina during the course of the 2013-14 season:

Riley Nash, Patrick Dwyer, Drayson Bowman, Manny Malhotra, Radek Dvorak, Zach Boychuk, Chris Terry, Brett Sutter and Kevin Westgarth

That is beyond pathetic - those eight combined scored 35 goals, 55 assists and 90 points in 397 games this season - he'll fit in with a Penguins team that has no 3rd and 4th line either

Gotta remember though, he can only spend what the owners tell him he can.
