The Redskins are not running the ball and it's hurting the entire team. It's hurting Kirk Cousins, it's hurting the defense and it's hurting the play-calling. I made this point after the Redskins lost to the Falcons in overtime and the reaction I received is what inspired this new "Fun Bunch" series. The Redskins swiped Bill Callahan from the Cowboys, gave him a No. 5 overall pick and told him to go to work. For two weeks, it worked great. The Redskins were running well, controlling the clock, and actually had an identity. That identity is gone. The Redskins yards per carry average is low and keeping the team behind the sticks. That puts the ball in Cousins hands more. Not ideal. I said it last week, the Redskins are not giving Cousins a game he can manage. More on Cousins' performance in a moment.

* I see a theory being floated around Twitter that the Redskins can't run because Cousins is so bad. That teams are stacking the box with eight defenders because they aren't afraid of Cousins' arm. Boiled down, that opinion means you can't have a good run game if you don't have a good quarterback. Which, of course, is ridiculous. Teams ARE stacking the box against the Redskins to stop the run but it's quite common around the league on obvious running downs. Teams are always trying to stop the run. No one fears Alex Smith's arm but Jamal Charles happens. No one fears Fitzpatrick's arm but Chris Ivory happens. No one fears Kaepernick's arm but Carlos Hyde happens. No one fears Nick Foles' arm but Todd Gurley is happening. See what I'm getting at? Running against an eight-man box isn't pretty. You're not going to get a body on a body. But if you're imposing your will, you have five mean, nasty OL pushing defenders into defenders, you're knocking people down, and you are creating lanes for your RB to find. And for the hype the fan base has for Callahan, it should be happening here. The running game is struggling yet he appears to be untouchable.

i agree with this and that doesnt mean i am against callahan . our RBS and line havent been doing the job

I think there's some flawed logic here. Fitzpatrick and Smith are both better than Cousins. And Charles and Gurley are insanely talented. Morris and Jones are not but Gurley and Charles are a level or 2 ahead of them. And its not like Hyde is tearing it up although hes solid. Its also important to remember that outside of Smith those QBs at least stretch the field with their arms a little and Cousins doesnt (whether thats his fault or not is another issue).

Yep.

Drives me crazy that it always ends up being a debate about Jay and the QB. Nature of fandom. But there are 53 people on the roster and other coaches/reasons involved in a loss or win.

The flawed logic is blaming all the offensive woes on Kirk.

He didn't help and had a horrible game but who thinks he is a QB that can win throwing the ball all the time with zero running game?

I never have.

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is the fact that Todd Bowles who ran the D in Arizona last year watched Kirk have a very similar game against his team last year as well. He knows Kirks tendencies (who doesn't at this point) and exploited them as any good coach does.

This Jets game was a terrible match up from the get go, given the lack of running game, deep ball, oline, injuries, facing a strong D. Pretty sure we all thought it could get ugly. No real surprise that it did. The happy surprise to me was Breeland and converting points off of TOs in the first half to compete.

I agree with what your saying I just don't feel like what was the best explanation. I think cousins and our lack of downfirld passing contributes to our inability to run more than any of those qbs.

Fair.

I'm not sure I blame that the most. I'm more in the winning the trenches side of the blame. But it all plays into it.

Against Redskins, Jets’ success on the ground looked awfully familiar — www.washingtonpost.com — Readability

Excerpt

“It’s a copycat league,” defensive end Ricky Jean Francois said. “What they did? They bounced it outside. We need to go into the film room and understand that teams week in and week out are going to find our weaknesses. The people that need to find out our weaknesses are ourselves. They ran the ball to the outside. They found holes. They found gaps. They did the same thing Atlanta did. It was successful, and they stuck to it.”

The Redskins have allowed more rushing yards over the past two games, 397, than in their first four games, 312. Prior to consecutive losses against the Falcons and Jets, Washington was ranked second in the NFL, allowing 78 rushing yards per game.

Ivory powered the Jets offense to 474 total yards, adding three catches for 50 yards. He displayed patience bouncing outside and following his blockers both in the pass and run. Even when the Redskins’ interior linemen were tested against Ivory, they failed to contain him. Washington allowed its biggest run to Ivory, a 54-yard toss, right up the middle during the second quarter.

Would like to see more of Preston myself. There have been issues with maturity so I'm guessing that's why we continue to not see more of him. But damn, we need some play making and he's shown that ability a few times now.

Agree. And Murphy is consistently unimpressive.

The fact that there hasn't been much discussion regarding the Oline we trotted out during the Jets game is interesting to me. In the battle of the trenches, we lost. Including our Dline which is the healthiest part of our team at the moment.
