He was the worst defensive liability in the Majors and refused to let a superior short stop play short. I’ve probably could have been a non liability at third base.

I agree with that, but they allowed that by giving him the captaincy and started letting him call the shots. He was the player and they were the Manager/GM/Owner. That is on them, not him.

Granted DRS only goes back to 2003, so I’m sure there were worse defenders before that, from 2003 until his retirement, there wasn’t a worse defensive player in the Majors and hasn’t been since according to DRS

not only that, but there were probably worse defenders who played far shorter careers. Adam Dunn cost his teams 168 runs per rfield and he played much easier positions. Dunn had -28.4 dWAR while Jeter's dWAR was -9.4. Michael Young was another lousy middle infielder (-152 rfield)

Brad Hawpe had a short career but he had some pretty awful defensive stats for a while (-65 Rfield in 910 games, -61 from 2007-2009). Even with him hitting .286/.384/.519 (126 OPS+) over that three year span, he was worth only 2.9 WAR because his defense was so bad.

That was Rivera, and he deserved it... Jeter got 99% and some people complained about that!!

I'm not sure if he was more overrated than Nolan Ryan, but he's definitely in the top 5...

He had a great long career and was very good and worthy of the Hall of Fame (for his longevity)- but for the first half of his career, he was behind Arod, Tejada & Garciaparra (in the AL!)...

I'm not sure if he was ever the 'best' short stop in any of his seasons....
To me, he was akin to Cal Jr.

Really solid with a long, long career but never the best at their position.

They should have just let dunn sit in a chair and eat Cheetos out of his mitt. If the ball wasnt within a one foot diameter of his body he wasn't touching it anyways.

Remember when he pitched?

He was throwing in the 80's with plenty of movement. It was honestly more fun to watch than a lot of the other position player pitching appearances.
