It would be monumentally stupid to try an put Jones on the PS. I think this board probably does overrate Hawkins, but also is overrating having Gaffney over one of the young guys. It's not going to make that much of a difference.

Btw, is anyone going to delete this post and ban Vance for 24 hours?

Exactly. And it's not like the Bengals are the only team with a plethora of receivers (or any other position for that matter) with "potential". Most teams have their own draftees whom they're trying to create room for on their own roster without having to worry about the 23rd receiver drafted.

It's like Briscoe all over again. Fans complained why he was on the PS to begin with after he was signed away. He's hardly torn the league up.

Hardly the same.

Is Lavernius Coles still available?

Whatever happened to Craig Yeast, Mauirce Mann, Tab Perry, Bennie Brazell, Mario Urrietia, and Freddie Brown? All drafted by Marvin after the 4th round. I'm shocked they didn't pan out.

Fact is, it's a risk either way. Gaffney could be good for a year or two, but Jones could be good for the next 5+. I'd rather take the risk on youth than a 31 year old.

Feel free to elaborate.

2010

One roster spot left. You had one guy with potential but yet to achieve it vs. another guy with potential but yet to play in an NFL game.

Two inexperienced, young guys that the Bengals had to make the choice on. Whom is Jabar Gaffney, the guy going into his 11th season and 4th team (one for the second time), in this scenario?

Briscoe, with no NFL experience?

Or

Simpson with two career catches?

Plus, Briscoe and Simpson were actually ON the team together at one point. Unlike Gaffney. Other than that, perfect comparison.

You missed the point about Briscoe.

It was simply to point out that we had another guy in Briscoe drafted in the 6th round that people did not want to put on the PS because of his potential, and now, despite him having been signed off of it by another team, nobody seems to remember him. The same thing is happening now. People are enamored by a 5th rounder (23rd WR taken in the draft) and not wanting to risk put him on the PS all at the expense of not making the team much better now by filling the biggest hole with a legitimate player (of course at this point assuming another one becomes available).

You're assuming Gaffney makes the team "much better" which I doubt. If I concede that the team would be better, it's not much.

If you want to say that there must be an issue with Jones because he lasted til the 5th round, don't you have to wonder whats wrong with Gaffney since nobody seems to want to keep him around?

Don't really care what you concede or what you don't. His stats speak for themselves.

As a #1 with Beck/Grossman as his QB, he put up 947 yards.
The season prior as a #2 with Orton/Tebow as his QB, he put up 875 yards.

65+ receptions in both seasons.

He would make a fine #2 option and definitely better than anything we have on the roster right now. And it's not even close.

Gaffney is a proven commodity. Jones is not.

Funny you say nobody wants to keep him around since the Patriots decided to bring him BACK.

Denver with Tebow and Washington with Beck/Grossman...yeah, I'm pretty sure you don't have a point here.

You're wrong, but we're used to that.

Ahh typical Vance response when he has nothing to offer in response to the facts.

But we're used to that.
