Or possibly healthy. Read that Nedney still wouldn't come to a team 100% healthy either.

More: Barrows says that the 49ers released an unknown player in the move as well. I thought they still had an extra spot on the roster that Cundiff took but apparently not?

I would imagine Bakhtiari, Hampton, or Jerod-Eddie?

Oops. Excuse me. I don't think it was Barrows that said that. It was Branch. Or maybe both? I'm all confused because I'm doing a million different things at once. Either way. It was reported that the 49ers released somebody to make room for Cundiff.

I'm totally cool with this move versus inaction. We have two weeks to work them both out......

yes, Baalke and Harbaugh are doing something about it, and thats the main thing. whether we keep Akers or Cundiff, we'll know the current best kicker won out.

not in favor of keeping two kickers, if Akers can't beat out Cundiff, why expect him to make LONG FG's? Akers wasn't kicking off to the end zone either, so that isn't a reason.

i'll take more accuracy from Cundiff less than 50 yards, cause most FG's are attempted less than 50 yards.

obviously, whomever we bring in won't be an All-Pro, if he was he wouldn't be available. also appears we keep thinking too much of last year with Akers? we need to focus more on what he's done this year? if you only look at this year, Akers is an easy call to cut.

At one point in his career, Cundiff was a kickoff specialist but I thought I read something recently that said he no longer excels on kickoffs either?

From Barrows

@mattbarrows: Heard Justin Medlock went 21-22 on FG attempts during his #49ers tryout today with one off the upright. Billy Cundiff? ...

@mattbarrows: ... He had two bonk off the upright, but both went in. He was 22-22 and also distinguished himself on kickoffs.

@MaioccoCSN: RT @SFgal68 does releasing Brandon Jacobs count as a roster move? > No. With suspension, Jacobs' spot on 53-man roster was filled.

At least he's hitting the posts. Akers hasn't been in the same zip code lately. Inaction is unacceptable.

All the beat guys confirmed the 49ers waived OLB Eric Bakhtiari to make room for the new kicker.

You'd think you could find a kicker that could actually MAKE kicks. :L @ Cundiff. What a bum.

I hope this is just one of those competition scenarios to light a fire, etc etc under Akers

"light a fire" applies to those who are lazy or not working hard enough to improve. in Akers case it is mental and doesn't appear to be getting better? some of you are still clinging to his 'name' from last year?

Akers hit 69% of his FG's and this ranks 2nd to the last in the NFL. the four NFL leaders are above 90%. Cundiff may not be 'all that', but i'd think he could be NFL average? if not average, better than 2nd to last in the NFL?

Akers poor performance is starring us in the face, so the "HOPING he gets better" stage is over. for me, i would make the change now cause in real games, Akers had 16 games to prove himself. so even if he beats Cundiff in practice i'd still be wary?

What I see is:
1) his kicks are lined up but tend to drift left when he misses
And
2) his kickoffs are not reaching as far as last year

I think the first one IS correctable and I'm not just going off name value.

The second is more a physical issue. Age could just be the factor here.

You mentioned that his issues may be mental. The competition thing could just be another mind game, Harbaugh is playing

In Cundiff's 5 games with Washington, he was 7/12 for a cool 58.3%. I'm not sure about you, but I thought 69 > 58.3

It is and it sucks.

Washington solved that issue with that Kai Forbath dude real fast.

To put it simply, some fans think the solution is "as long as its not Akers". There just aren't any good veteran options out there left
