NORMAN – After years of good luck with the BCS, Oklahoma fell on the wrong side of the controversial formula Sunday night.

Despite their Big 12 Conference co-championship, 10-2 record and No. 11 ranking, the Sooners were left out of a BCS bowl when MAC champion Northern Illinois took what would have been OU's at-large berth.

The Sooners will play Heisman Trophy favorite Johnny Manzeil and Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl (7 p.m. Jan. 4), a source close to bowl's selection committee confirmed.

Northern Illinois will reportedly draw Florida State in the Orange Bowl. The Huskies qualified for their first BCS by finishing among the top 16 in the final standings and ahead of a BCS conference champion, in this case Louisville from the Big East.

Even after OU defeated TCU Saturday afternoon, it seemed unlikely Northern Illinois could jump five BCS spots from No. 21 on the heels of their MAC championship victory over Kent State Friday night.

In fact, the Sooners rooted for NIU in that game, since Kent State was ranked No. 17 in the BCS at the time and stood a better chance of getting into the top 16. But enough went right for NIU, and wrong for teams ahead of them in the BCS standings, to shake up the standings.

OU was poised to accept a Sugar Bowl invitation and matchup with Florida, not to mention reap the financial benefits of a second BCS bid for the Big 12 (along with co-champ Kansas State's automatic bid to the Fiesta Bowl).

The Sooners will still receive a $7.35 million payout from the Cotton Bowl, and play in arguably the closest thing to a BCS bowl outside the BCS. They'll make their first Cotton appearance since beating Arkansas in the 2002 game, when it was still actually played in the Cotton Bowl and not Cowboys Stadium.

It's just not the bowl they had hoped for when they pranced around Amon Carter Stadium after Saturday's victory chanting "B-C-S!"

It's not the kind of bowl the Sooners played in 2003, '04 and '08, when their favorable BCS ranking kept them in the national championship game.
