It was the most shocking trade that I can remember.

I literally thought it was a joke when I saw it and didnt believe it until hours after I first heard it.

I can't think of a more shocking trade than this. Not even the slightest peep that either guy was getting moved much less for each other. This might even be the most shocking trade in sports, not just the NBA.
Ever hear of Wayne Gretzky???? The greatest player to play his sport. Is Luca that???

Edmonton got 3 1sts back and $15m (Gretzky's salary was about 300K at the time for comparison) along with 2 players. Edmonton got better pcs back than Dallas. Still certainly shocking at the time.

They traded a national treasure and the greatest player the sport ever had. Nothing can top that. Unless the Bulls would have traded Jordan.

Not sure about nothing can top it.

Ruth to the Yankees.

That curse followed the Red Sox for more than 80 years.

Luka is arguably a top 2-3 player in the NBA in a much more internationally watched league and was had for far less than Edmonton received is the point. I agree the Gretzky trade is definitely in the same category, but NHL just doesn't come to peoples' minds a much as NFL, NBA and MLB.

That might be true. On the other hand, Dallas had some very good fortune in the playoffs last year. They were lucky to face a Thunder team that was like the youngest playoff team ever, or something, and looking back, it's hard to even see how they won that series. Doncic was excellent, but Gilgeous-Alexander was unbelievable ( 32 / 8 /7, 55% from 3! ).

Doncic needed Irving to bail him out in the first round against the Clippers where he shot 40% -- overall -- and 24% from the arc. And oh by the way, Leonard only played 59 minutes in that series.

Heh, we'll see. People said exactly the same thing about James Harden ten years ago. High-volume shooters with mediocre accuracy may score a lot of points, but that's not actually a great model for winning championships, especially if they are useless defensively.
Luka is one of two players to ever average 30+ ppg in the playoffs. The other is MJ
You're babbling about him being bailed out in the playoffs. For his career in the playoffs he is 31/9/9. Hopefully you have sobered up today

I’m not sure young Bro is legal age to drink… but I’m sure him mom has ample supply of gin he swipes.

Pretty telling when the Laker fans I respect on this forum all think he’s full of shit.

Its a contender for worst trade in the history of sports. I've heard reporters all day that asked GM's what they would have given if they had had a chance to bid on Luka. The answer most gave was "everything". And Fella wants to talk about his defense in a first round series they won on their way to the Finals lol. Strong Gin

This is false.

You apparently attached to this to the wrong statement. My previous comment was demonstrably not "false".

Not saying we always know what is going on behind closed doors. We don’t.
Precisely.

In this case, Davis was highly motivated not to make a public spectacle of shopping around -- doing so a couple weeks after winning a title would have been an incredibly bad look in a league that at least pays lip service to the notion that players care most about winning.

The Lakers paid so much to get Anthony Davis because he was not a rental. He said the Lakers were his preferred destination, and while there was no guarantee, it was always expected by everyone that he would resign.

Which is precisely calling him a one-year rental. Thank you for finally admitting it.

And he did. The Celtics wisely wouldn’t include Tatum in their AD proposal because he would have actually been a rental for them based on his comments.

Why then did the Lakers have to include Ingram, Ball, Hart, Wagner, several other prospects and half-a-decade of draft capital?

We apparently just saw yesterday that Pelinka is not a complete moron when it comes to negotiating. He didn't give Dallas the 2031 pick as a tip. Why did he give New Orleans vastly more than necessary, in your story?

Had Davis been willing to re sign in Boston? Tatum might have been a Pelican. The Celtics did not expect AD to resign after the 1 year, so they weren’t willing to raise their bid enough to get him.

In other words, exactly as I said, Los Angeles outbid every one to rent Davis.

And second, the fact that the Lakers had to pay so much to acquire him despite being the only team that didn’t view AD as a rental (see what I did there?) is absolutely proof as to his immense trade value.
If they were certain Davis would sign a contract with them, they only had to offer New Orleans a reasonable offer -- not a Godfather one. If they declined, they would sign Davis a few months later and keep that pile of assets, and they'd have been a super team with several more rings by now.

Which is my point -- they ridiculously overpaid to rent Davis for one season.

There's no alternative story that comports with the facts of the situation.
