The more I watch this guy the more striking the similarities are becoming. Velocity and movement are eerily similar as is the approach Hendricks is taking. Great command and ability to change speeds with the same pitch. It was at about this point in his career where Maddux seemed to "get it" as it appears Hendricks has. Obviously he will need to continue it for a LONG time to earn this comparison but does anyone else see the similarities?

Yeah its a high target obviously but Hendricks reminds me more of Maddux that anyone has since Maddux retired. Even their career trajectory to this point is very comparable

There was a Braves fan on ESPN that said Mike Minor reminded him of Maddux. Lol.

edit: actually, it may have been Jurrjens or Hanson.

I think he's gonna have to start finishing more games if he's gonna be the next Greg Maddux...

I guess you could call that trade a Dempster fire.

That's hilarious.

Though none have reminded me of Maddux, the closest of the Braves pitchers during that span to him would have been Kris Medlen for the second half of one season, but even then, the thought never crossed my mind. Really the only thing he had that was close to Maddux was the 2 seamer over the inside corner as an out pitch to left handed bats.

He's a good pitcher but I wouldn't compare him to Maddux just yet.

Hendricks has been one of the better starting pitchers in the NL since cracking the Cubs rotation in 2014. His stats in that span:

7.7 fWAR (14th in NL)
3.04 ERA (12th)
3.35 FIP (16th)
3.56 xFIP (17th)
14.7% K-BB% (17th)
0.71 HR/9 (12th)
1.10 WHIP (9th)
3.66 SIERA (18th)
50.7% ground ball rate (13th)
393.1 innings in 67 games (66 starts)

He may be a #4 on the Cubs, but he'd easily be a #2/3 on most teams.

To be fair, Maddux started pitching at a time where it was still pretty common for guys to finish with 10+ complete games. Complete games have really been on the decline for decades. Maddux is an all-time great, but I get the feeling he'd have somewhat fewer complete games if he'd started his career a couple decades later.

Didn't think I needed to make it clear that Hendricks isn't as accomplished now as Maddux was at career end but for those of you who need that clarification here it is l- the thread title is "Is Kyle Hendricks BECOMING Greg Maddux 2.0?". As in, there are striking similarities to stuff, velocity, movement, control and approach between the 2 guys 2+ years into their respective careers. Frankly Hendricks has pretty vastly superior numbers than Maddux had 2+ years in but this Cubs team is also much better than those were.

Yes he is.

In terms of how he gets batters out, of course. Is he as accomplished as Maddux was at his age? No, but that's not the question.

He gets hitters out by changing speeds and locating, all while pounding the strike zone. That's exactly what Maddux did. There will never be another Maddux but Hendricks does what Maddux did as well as anybody in the pros right now.
