Northern teams recruit to northern climate and recruit players who can play in inclement conditions. SOuthern teams do not do that. Thus when southern teams HAVE to play in those conditions they fail miserably. It actually has been that way for forever. If bowls were played outdoors in Chicago, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Cincinnati we would all be talking about how much of a miserable clusterfuck failure the SEC has been over the last 20 years.
