Even though we were terrible for most of the "worst team money can buy" years, I do miss our ability to sign guys. A decade ago we would have signed Clippard, Bastardo and Cespedes no problem and called it an offseason.

Downside to that is that we didn't have the greatest management. Harazin was pretty much clueless. I think the jury's still out on Minaya.

I"d love to know where the Wilpons are financially at this point. They've clearly pulled back the baseball spending, they got a month of free revenue from the playoffs. If their finances are not in order at this point it's a joke.

Wilpons have got to be ecstatic that the farm system saved this team and probably them financially. On top of the free month of playoff revenue, attendance will be up big this year. Still I think they are tiptoeing on the edge for awhile and don't see them increasing spending much. It's too bad because this team could use a couple of big bats to really make them a force.

Pretty sure the tigers were never interested in bringing him back anyway....

The Wilponzi's/Sandy Alderson would be wise to work out something along the lines of the Justin Upton deal w/ his agent.
They have the revenue to do it.
Hopefully they don't want to start "slumming" it all over again.
:L

I would like to see him signed because God knows we need some power in that lineup but I would be scared to sign him to a 5+ year deal.

I didn't think it was possible to dislike the Wilpon's any more than I disliked them already...but they are really in danger of reverting back to their treachery and their disregard for the team and the fans if they refuse to spend the way a contender in the #1 media market ought to spend....especially coming off a NL pennant winning season.

Disgusting.

What's perplexing to me is even from a business standpoint it makes sense to spend. With this young and awesome rotation they could be contenders for years with a few big free agents here and there. In a New York market with an exciting winning team the revenues will skyrocket.

Apparently the Nats are willing to spend to win :noidea:

They offered him less than what the Tigers gave to Upton.....hmmmmm.
Something tells me the Nats don't really want to sign him but would rather put the issue back onto the mets just to fuck with them and force them to overspend.
But would it be overspending, per se?
I don't think so...when it could be a 4 or 5 yr deal, with an opt out after 2 or 3....and considering Grandy isn't getting younger and Conforto isn't really "proven" at this point of his career yet.

Mets agree with Antonio Bastardo on 2-year, $12 million deal

NEW YORK -- 1/20/16 -- The
Mets have agreed with left-handed reliever Antonio Bastardo on a two-year, $12 million deal to serve as a setup man, a source told ESPN.com. The deal is pending a physical.

Bastardo, 30, will join Addison Reed as the primary relievers setting up closerJeurys Familia.
Bastardo went 4-1 with a 2.98 ERA and one save in 66 relief appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.

He was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball in 2013 as part of the Biogenesis case.

The Mets also fortified their bullpen this offseason by re-signing Jerry Blevins, and fellow left-handed reliever Josh Edgin, who missed last season after having Tommy John surgery, is expected back by May.

Team officials also acknowledge remaining in contact with representatives of free-agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes .

Really like the Bastardo signing. A reliever was a must, need to be able to bridge the cap from our starters (6/7 innings?) to Familia. I like the mix of Bastardo/Reed/Blevins to lock down the 7th and 8th innings. Who knows, maybe Montero comes in and winds up being a major asset as well.

Trying not to count our eggs before they hatch but this bullpen has some serious potential if we're still in it late in the year and guys stay healthy.

Familia
Bastardo
Blevins
Reed
Edgin
Possibly Mejia by the trade deadline (who knows what he'll be like if he's off the sauce or if there are any plans to bring him back into the mix)
Montero
Colon

A lot of ifs but if things break right for us that could be a great pen.

The Nationals are “pressing” to complete a deal with outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, reports Jon Heyman (links to Twitter). The Nats are believed to be willing to offer a little more than $100MM over a five-year term at this point with some deferrals — a tactic they used in structuring Max Scherzer’s seven-year deal last winter. Heyman characterizes the talks between the two sides as serious.

Well, it was fun, say goodbye to the NL East title.

Austin Jackson might be interesting as well.
