NBA salary cap will be $2M less than expected

Just short of what was expected, but will this be the fly in the ointment for certain teams?
Will we see more salary dumps than expected?

Such a crazy off-season so far, does this add yet another wrinkle into the mix?

might make it a bit harder for the C's to add hayward, but with so many non-guaranteed contracts, I doubt it.

Agreed.
Will be interesting to see what teams with salary cap space do.
Acquire picks/players for bad contracts and/or throw money at RFA/UFA.

How does Portland navigate their salary cap hell and three first round picks?
Can the Nets get out of the cellar?
Will we see more 3+ team trades to free up cap space?

They could try to trade one of their guys for a non-guaranteed contract.

Celts have Zeller and Jackson and need a stretch 4.

People had thought the cap would go up to 108 million. This will DEFINITELY impact the Warriors, Cavs, Celts and other cap strapped teams.

This definitely helps teams like the Nets who still have lots of cap space and would be willing to take on some bad contracts for the right asset.

Celts aren't cap strapped. They can add a max deal.

The warriors are going to destroy the cap no matter what. I'm not sure this effects them except for tax purposes.

All depends on what they plan to do. If all they want to do is sign Hayward then they are fine.

You're right about the Cavs. No way they can get under the cap.

Yeah, the teams most affected are the ones who have been clearing out some cap space to spend in FA.

Your dollars just got a little shorter. Need more room for a max deal than expected.

Yeah, the teams who are currently under the cap are probably more affected than the teams you mentioned.

Except Philly who seems to have unlimited cap space lol

Looks like the Spurs are going to have a tough time staying under the cap.

The Sixers benefit from having no one with a salary above 9 million. The downside for them is that last year's win total was their highest in 5 years and they won 26 games. It should be interesting to watch what they do this year.

I love Patty Mills for them.

What the Sixers could do is take on some crappy contract like Alan Crabbe, get a shooter and perhaps some additional assets. That way they wouldn't need to worry about the contract bumping into the reups for Embiid or Simmons.

it doesnt really change things with the big name players fitting in ability.

Those contracts are capped at a % of the cap.

Chris Paul can only make 35% of the cap for example.

It might make things a little harder for squeezing in middle tier players who are not tied to the cap.

Question for you salary cap nerds :

Can a team with salary cap space trade for Evan Turner and not have to match salary in return?

If Philly deals for Turner, can they then offer to buy him out of his contract?
For instance, Turner signed for 4/70 with POR last season.
He's already made $16M.
If Philly buys him out for say, $20M, and releases him, he can sign as a FA for 3/34 and essentially make the same amount of money. Maybe he gets more from another team.

POR trades a 1st rounder and gets some relief from Salary Cap hell.
PHI spends money that they have plenty of and pick up another asset.

Does PHI have to send back equal $ to acquire Turner?

Matching is only if you're over the cap.

teams dump salary all the time.

the buyout stuff, I'm not entirely sure how buyouts work.
