Here are the top 13 scoring offenses in NFL history, and how they fared. Only one won the Super Bowl.

3. GREEN BAY 2011 season, 560 points. Result: Lost to NY Giants in divisional round.

4. NEW ENGLAND 2012 season, 557 points. Result: Lost to Baltimore Ravens in AFC Championship Game.

5. MINNESOTA 1998 season, 556 points. Result: Lost to Atlanta in the NFC Championship Game.

6. NEW ORLEANS 2011 season, 547 points. Result: Lost to the 49ers in the NFC divisional round.

I remember having a t-shirt that stated Defense Wins Championships. It was from the Bucs Super Bowl.

The 2013 Ravens had a mediocre defense and threw the ball over the top ranked 49ers defense

Neither the 2012 Giants nor the 2012 Patriots had a defense ranked in even the top 25.

The 2010 New Orleans Saints won with a 27th ranked defense

............

So, its kind of a tired cliché about DEFENSE winning championships.

The reality is that GOOD TEAMS win championships in multiple fashions.

Some win with defense like the 2000 Ravens.
Some overwhelm you with offense like the 2010 Saints.

But nobody wins without some balance in that game.

It's not the team that plays the best defense all year, it's the team that plays the best defense in the playoffs and Super Bowl. The Giants teams in recent memory that won Super Bowls turned it on defensively in the playoffs. The Saints team you refer to locked up that Super Bowl on a pick six.

It would be more accurate to say that either offense or defense can win games but BALANCE wins the most important ones, whatever the sport. WHATEVER the sport!

Exactly. You can win it all with great offense, but only if your defense plays well enough.

That said, I believe great defense is more important than great offense.

Couldn't find that data, but I know off the top of my head the 2000 Ravens and 2013 Seahawks are on that list. That's 2 champs at least, likely more.

The #1 defenses over the last 25 years did not win at any real greater pace than #1 offenses.

There are plenty of 1991 Eagles and 1998 Chargers who could not even make the playoff with top ranked defenses as well.

Balance wins.

But its more cliché and macho to use the "tough guy" approach about "defense wins championships."

Fuck the rankings. In both of their SB runs the Giants held their opponents to an average of 14 points over 8 playoff/SB games. They won with defense.

top offenses not winning SBs doesn't mean and has nothing to do with defense winning games or SBs.

defense has never ever won a game ever. You need balance on both sides of the ball but offense is and always will be why teams win games or don't win games. You want a defense to help with field position but you need to score and defense cant do crap about that long term and barely short term with lucky int. returns etc.

Let's check out the last 5 championship teams defensive rankings before Seattle

Baltimore-17th
Giants-27th
Green Bay-5th
New Orleans-25th
Pittsburgh-1st

So 3 of the last 6 championship teams had a crappy defense

Did you watch the Giants that year? Through 4 postseason games and 2 must win regular season games to close the season, they held opponents to 14 points average, that included 2 top 3 offenses (Packers/Pats). That 27th rank means nothing when the defense balls when they need to.

until linebackers can throw TD passes defense will never ever win any championships.

the defense did nothing to help Eli make great passes on those final/last drives..they contributed to the possibility of it happening but did not make it happen..the offense made it happen

Yeah, if they had a shitty or even average defensive performance, they dont win that championship.

I definitely agree with the balance statements. And season rankings are mostly meaningless if a team can turn it on in the playoffs. Just making a point that if it's #1 defense against #1 offense, I'm going with defense. Denver was talked about as a Super Bowl favorite all year, only to average half of their regular season scoring average. HALF!

Here stats on top ranked defense by year in the last 10 years (I did this manually):

2013: Seattle Seahawks: points allowed: 231 and yards allowed: 4378 -------- Won Superbowl
2012: Steelers: points allowed: 314 and yards allowed: 4413 -------- Did not make the playoffs
2011: Steelers: points allowed: 227 and yards allowed: 4348 ----Lost against Broncos (Tebow) In Wildcard
2010: Chargers: points allowed: 322 and yards allowed: 4345 -------- Did not make the Playoffs
2009: Jets: points allowed: 236 and yards allowed: 4037 ------ Lost against the Colts in AFC championship
2008: Steelers: points allowed: 223 and yards allowed: 3795 -------- Won Superbowl
2007: Steelers: points allowed: 269 and yards allowed: 4262 -------- Lost Against the Jaguars in Wildcard
2006: Ravens: points allowed: 201 and yards allowed: 4225 -------- Lost Against the Colts in Divisional
2005: Buccaneers: points allowed: 274 and yards allowed: 4444 ------ Lost Against the Redskins in Wildcard
2004: Steelers: points allowed: 251 and yards allowed: 4134 -Lost Against the Patriots in AFC Championship

According to Stats 2013 Seahawk is not best in the last decade based on points or yards.

Only two teams with the best defense won the Superbowl. 2013 Seahawks and 2008 Steelers

Two teams with best defense did not even make the playoffs: 2012 Steelers and 2010 Chargers

Best defense based on yards is 2008 Steelers.

Best defense based on points is 2006 Ravens

Well the Hawks D outscored Denver last night. Add in that Harvin kickoff return TD and you have 16-8 ass whoopin with ZERO offense
