If this defense can improve into the upper half of the league...

in fact I just checked the history, in the last 4 years, there has been only one Bears/Lions game with a final score more than a score apart.

and one other thing. Minor detail really.

Ndamakong Suh is going into a contract year.

Yeah, that's really not good for opposing offenses. It just plain isn't.

GB and Det both have top offenses that can match us. In fact GB is just better then us on the O side and now have Lacey. Maybe I,m jaded but there are two things that scare me about our team. 1 is mel tucker and the other is Cutler. This pass happy offense we now employ, you know the one that everybody says is how things are now, has yet to win squat. It's the teams that run, control the clock and play def that win come playoff time. Same as it always have been and always will be. I don't want to be negative but I just don't believe in our coaching staff or our new style of play. I see 10 wins and a WC loss. GB will have 12 wins.

I hear you... Just unusual to hear you so pessimistic. I do agree about Mel, but I did like our other D coach pick ups... Very smart on Emery's part, but this year is live or die for Mel. Cutler we all know what we get, but I'm thinking the O line improves even more from last year.

D is going to be nasty. I can't wait for this D line to jell... Jared Allen, Houston, you kidding me that beats anything we've had in the last 3 years. Ratliff with an off season to heal up and get ready, this is tasty stuff here. It all starts up front which will equate to more chance for Jay. So when he screws up, he will atleast get a few more cracks at it.

what on Earth are you talking about? The Lions beat us both games last year, and now they have a real coach. Even Caldwell is better than Schwartz, and considering that the main thing that has been holding the Lions back has been Stafford's inconsistency, and Caldwell is a good QB coach if nothing else (no doubt this is why they hired him), they could be quite good.

The spread between the teams is pretty slim. Yes, I'm worried that neither Lions game is a gimme. That's crazy.

Yes, early in the season they pounded us. They were playing good football early on, they fell apart late.

That game at Soldier Field was a fucking joke, and everyone including Lions fans know that deep down. Cutler hopping on one foot the whole damn day. Scoring two touchdowns on one drive that would have been the difference in the game, and having both called back on a challenge reversal and holding call that were both questionable. The tipped ball interception on the one-yard line. We literally handed them that game on a silver platter.

The Lions suck. Plain and simple. They looked like dog-shit the last half of 2013, and they made no improvements that I can really see. Caldwell is not a great coach either. He's an improvement from Schwartz, obviously. But he was far from impressive in Indianapolis.

EDIT: Yeah… I guess I still don't like the Lions even though Schwartz is gone. I was wrong. Just… fuck that team. I think Stafford is a loser, I think Suh sucks as a human being, and I just think everyone on that god damned team has a shit/loser attitude. Maybe that'll change with the clown out of the picture. But just take anything I say about them with a grain of salt. Nothing more.

The Colts did nothing but diminish under Caldwell. Consistent deterioration.

Agree w/ noon here. Tucker hasn't shown shit yet. Every opposition teams big player ( or star) if you prefer. Has killed us. He hasn't shown the capacity to eliminate a favorite target, or RB.
Yeah a lot had to do w/ D-Line injuries. But just think doubling the best WR the opposition has from the get go, would have paid dividends .

I agree that they werent able to game plan at all last season. But if your safeties are constantly being involved in the run, and not from blitzing, you have problems up front. You cant expect guys to cover WRs, when there is zero pressure up front.

I don't care who the hell was coaching that defense last year… it would have sucked.

I really don't get what Tucker did so wrong.

Our safeties couldn't do shit all year. They couldn't cover the top of the field. They couldn't cover the run.
They plain out sucked. PERIOD . But the D-line injuries exposed our safeties for what they were piss poor.
Just wish they could have kept Wright instead of Conte. But shit happens. Really didn't like either but, especially dislike Conte.

Because Tucker and the defense are the only teams to give up touchdowns to the best players in the league. Of course Mel Tucker didn't game plan for the opposing teams he was after all running the Lovie Smith version of the Steve Smith defense.

He didnt necessarily do anything wrong, but he didnt do anything right either. Really not sure what he did.

How would we know? When you're forced to work with back ups to the back ups, how do you know he did anything at all? Could be he did a lot, but the scrubs he had to work with were epic fails... I mean, we all know Shea isn't a DE, but he was forced to play Shea at DE all freaking year. Awful. Just awful. Same for whomever we had a DT until Ratliff showed.

Exactly. I could see Detroit finishing last in the North this season. I'm shocked that there are Bears fans worried about Detroit.

If Det is done making stupid mistakes 3 to 5 times per game, then they have improved 25.291647% to 36.225673% right there. Plus we got Mel.

I could see the D much improved from a injury standpoint alone, the new talent on the Dline is exactly what we needed also. Jay and Mel have to prove themselfs to me, before I see us competing for a SB. We have the talent if healthy. Jay has to improve his int to TD rate and Mel has to have a heart attack before I see us beating good teams. But I hope the Dline is nasty as the come.

He still made no adjustments or clearly defined what kind of D he was trying to be. You could run the same play 5 times a game against us and get away with it. Where is it Mel shined at before coming here? How did he deserve this job???

The safeties couldnt do shit because the defense allowed 161 rush yards per game. ANY secondary is going to be compromised when they constantly have to come up in run support when they see ball carrier reach the second level. That just sets the stage for getting torched on play action.
