It'll be an offensive player.

He's the best player this season in college football. What other defender is as good as him this season? There is not another NCAA player that stands out as much as him. You can name Klein or any QB and there is another one you can say deserves it as much.

With Te'o, there is not another defender you could say that about. That is why I thought Suh deserved the Heisman as well. That, and he won every other award he was eligible for.

The majority of voters see it as an offensive award.

Unfortunately it has also been a team award rather than an individual award.

Wasn't Baylor 9-3 at the time of the Heisman Ceremony? Also, against a QB in a 1-loss team?

Not so sure it's accurate to say it's become a "team" award rather than an "individual" award.

Show me an offensive player that comes within 500 total yards of Johnny Manziel.

You might find somebody, but I've checked the popular choices...Barkley, Geno, Bridgewater, Klein...haven't found it yet..

Te'o is far from the best defensive player in the last 20 years. If he should win it would be a travesty for all the other, better, defensive players before him.

Yeah, RG III was an exception, but look at the other candidates and who they play for. ND, K. State, Oregon.

It's been a team award for years. If USC was undeafeted, Barkley would still be in the mix.

90 tackles, 6 picks, 1.5 sacks.. that's not that dominant..

jack tyler has more tackles then him... 6 picks is impressive, but you dont win the heisman on 6 picks (amerson had what, 13 last year and didnt even get talked about)

the only reason te'o gets mentioned is because he's the best player on an undefeated notre dame team

(tackle stats taken from espn and are considered unofficial)

If Oklahoma was still unbeaten, Landry Jones would still be in the mix.

Maybe ND starts giving him goal line carries these last 2 games? Would that help his case?

I really don't see Te'o being head and shoulders above several of the good defensive guys this year (aside from ESPN hype). Jarvis Jones is a beast, Sam Montgomery is really good, Amerson at NC State is something else, Clowney's a monster. Most all of these guys would be getting the hype if they played on a undefeated team baring the injury bug for a few. As has been said, Te'o is really good but there have been many better defensive guys the last several years who didn't even get mentioned in the Heisman talks.

You make a good point and as a freshman makes it more impressive. I wouldn't compare Barkley's stats with Manziel's state because Barkley's a pocket passer. Just because Michael Vick was a better dual threat than Peyton Manning doesn't mean he was better. However, I don't think Barkley's had a Heisman season anyway. i wouldn't have him in the conversation.

But I do think Te'o has had the season as a defender that he could be a Heisman.

I feel like the Heisman isn't kind to Freshman though. Otherwise AP should have won his freshman year hands down in my opinion. I'd be fine with Manziel getting it.
