Elway today:
“We have to see where it is,” Elway said. “Even with Peyton, we weren’t a for sure thing with Peyton. That was always fluid, too, but he was our target.”

Sounds to me like Cousins is the target this time. But the only way we will ever know is if he signs with us. Otherwise, it was never the plan. ;)

This is where I'm at too. Go the rookie route. Get your guy, commit 100%, build a team around his skill set and take it from there. Keep the QB money cheap for now and fix the rest of our many holes. I would love for that rookie to be Rosen, if possible. Mayfield would probably be 2nd on my list.

You said it not me ......

We have a Qb we drafted. He has a Skill set. We have not used him that way.

You’ve been around dead carcasses to know they stink. That’s what the locker room thinks.

Well you do know why Rivers was drafted . But had I been the GM Brees would still been in LA .

I kind of agree with this, but I don't think Cousins is on the level of the elite guys in the league that would fit in that category. Like Mile High said, I think we should take advantage of picking early in a draft full of QB prospects and groom our own guy. We would get 4 years to figure out if he is truly the guy or not, then we pay him whatever he wants. If we want Cousins, we will have to probably sacrifice Talib (who is probably gone anyway), Manny Sanders, maybe DT, and maybe Wolfe or another defensive piece this year to bring him in. Plus, we would have to look at guys who have contracts expiring next year or the year after (Ray, Roby, and Harris off the top of my head) to see who we can keep or who will take a discount to stay. Honestly, I was (and still am, really) fine with paying Cousins somewhere around 25 mil, but I don't think that would be enough now that Garappolo got 27.5 or whatever it was. And with Minnesota having more cap room than us and more of a team that he can be surrounded by, it would take a crazy sales pitch to convince him to come to Denver over Minnesota. I wasn't worried much about the Jets, since they are more of a project, but the way things are shaking out, I don't see us winning this bidding war that is about to ensue for Cousins.

Well then if you are willing to pay $25 million give Washington a 7th round pick.

I've been as big of a Paxton Lynch fan as anyone out there, crash. Unfortunately and for whatever reason, the Broncos just don't see him as an answer any more and they're apparently moving on. Questionable work ethic, poor practice reps, no development in his minimal game experience, spotty grasp of the playbook, inability to read defenses and other stuff are all on the reported list of shortcomings for young Lynch. You and I are not out at Dove Valley every day, so we have no choice but to defer to the decisions that they make. Today's NFL is a "now" league.

In hindsight, I too wish the Broncos would have thrown Paxton out there for more games but we can't change history at this point. My comments above were relative to what I hear, read and see. To me, it's clear that the Broncos are moving on. Paxton will probably remain on the roster but there will be others brought in to fill the job. Hey man, just my opinion.

Why are we still talking about Paxton Lynch as our future QB? Wasted time. I know it's slow right now but spend your energy on other issues.

This will be interesting come March 14.

If Cousin takes a tour to several teams maybe he does not sign until day 3 ala Manning.
What are the other FA QBs doing?
Waiting for Kirk to set the market or will they sign sooner. If they do sign early and Denver loses Cousins there may only be Plan D left. Draft a QB. We know how that turned out last time Denver had Sanchez as the only vet QB on the roster.

One BIG difference - we weren't drafting at # 5.

Plan B is moving up to number one. Elway is going to go all in on this qb derby

I agree that Elway is going to try to make a big splash. Could be Cousins, could be a move up but Elway is going to be aggressive.

Word from NFL network at the Combine is that Cousins isn't looking for a huge blockbuster deal this time because he wants to be a FA again in a few years to get even more money when the market is higher. Could be beneficial to us, maybe we sign him to a 3 year deal and see how he does instead of putting all our eggs in his basket right now. If we sign him to a 5 year $140+ million deal now, that really screws us if he doesn't work.

Elway has always been creative on his contracts, and that has worked out. It is pretty rare that we have a bad contract on the books. Elway also likes to sign guys to shorter contracts. There have been a couple exceptions there, but for the most part he is not signing guys really long term with out easy ways out of the contract with little to no dead money.
