i understand your predicament TM. some games...well, some games are liking watching paint dry (i'm looking at you Jacque Lemaire)...but those games are all worth the excitement of OT hockey. when you get some good run and gunners together it's a blast to watch. just catch some VS games to start and go from there. if you ever wanna watch a few pens games, i have plenty of links for feeds online.

I mean, I may watch a season game here and there, but I think playoff hockey has the best post season games in sports.

But season hockey is like season NBA: just drab.

So should I reconsider?

Playoffs are definitely more intense, as you know exactly what is on the line.
to enjoy regular season as much, it would probably help to have a vested interest in a team. Doesn't have to be the local team, but it helps when you care about the result.
from there, you start caring about divisional races, playoff seeding, etc.

The Houston Aeros are currently in the Calder Cup playoffs (and winning their series 1-0). You can get lowers for less than $30 and uppers for pretty cheap. It's not NHL hockey, but they're local and you'll get to feel the speed/power of the game live. Aeros Web site

And I gotta say, the jerseys are pretty money - Whalers colors, good crest...
